Today and everyday we honour the children and survivors of the Residential School System that ran in 1879-1996, and stole an estimated 150,000+ First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children from their homes and families. This observance coincides with Orange Shirt Day, and we wear orange to affirm that Every Child Matters. Founder Phyllis Webstad (Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation) says, "When I got to the Mission, they stripped me, and took away my clothes, including the orange shirt! I never wore it again. I didn’t understand why they wouldn’t give it back to me, it was mine! The color orange has always reminded me of that and how my feelings didn’t matter, how no one cared and how I felt like I was worth nothing. All of us little children were crying and no one cared." It has been a such pleasure to help bring Public Health Association of BC's Rise Up! Strengthening Food Systems and Environmental Stewardship initiative to life over the last seven months! Thanks to the diligent team at PHABC, we’ve been able to develop a specialized platform that connects youth aged 15-30 in BC with diverse volunteering opportunities in their local food systems - including a robust learning component curated by CityHive Vancouver. This project was particularly vital for PHABC as it embarked on a new youth engagement venture, which required more capacity for volunteer outreach, recruitment, and management. Our solution provided not only bolstered organizational capacity but also streamlined data management and communication processes. A huge thank you to Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden for hosting a wonderful volunteer fair in Vancouver’s Chinatown over the weekend! Our members Raaj Chatterjee and Daniela Sanchez Dominguez were thrilled to join the Chinese Canadian Museum Society of British Columbia, the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation, and the Canadian International Dragon Boat Festival Society for this special event. The best part of this experience was getting to meet over 100 volunteers who share our passion for making an impact in our communities!
