About us
Meewasin is a non-profit organization dedicated to conserving the cultural and natural resources of the South Saskatchewan River Valley. It serves as the means by which the three participating parties—the City of Saskatoon, the Government of Saskatchewan, and the University of Saskatchewan—manage the Meewasin Valley in the South Saskatchewan River Basin. Meewasin operates on the principle that by working together through a single agency, the partners can achieve more than they could individually.

We are thrilled to share that Meewasin has received a $250,000 donation from BHP! 🎉 The announcement was made this morning by Simon Thomas, BHP's Vice President of Projects, Potash. Simon is pictured alongside Christine Magneson, BHP's Principal of Government Relations, as they participated in a sheep grazing demonstration following the announcement. The donation will provide support for specialized staff, equipment, and materials which will result in a significant improvement in the environmental condition of the Meewasin Valley. We cannot thank BHP enough for investing in the improvement of our environment, and by extension, in the quality of life for the people of Saskatoon.

Our partners at Park People / Ami·es des parcs have highlighted some of our key conservation efforts in their latest report. Check out their post below to learn more!
Meet our Cornerstone Park partner, the Meewasin Valley Authority, which manages the Meewasin Valley—a 6,700-hectare area in the South Saskatchewan River Basin in Saskatoon. Their mission? To ensure a healthy and vibrant river valley with a balance between human use and conservation. In 2023 alone, 542 volunteers removed over 25,400 m² of invasive species and planted 8,800 native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers. Among their impactful projects is a mobile app highlighting traditional uses of the region’s land, river, and medicinal plants, showcasing the intersection between traditional Indigenous and ecological knowledge. This morning, I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Theresa Kliem on CBC Saskatoon's morning radio show. As I sat on a park bench in the picturesque Trinity College Botanical Garden in Dublin, Ireland, I shared my Nuffield Canada project and my experiences during my first week in England with her audience, Thank you to Nature Conservancy of Canada for sponsoring my Nuffield Canada Agriculture Scholarship and to my other sponsors: SaskParks, Meewasin Valley Authority, Brett Young Seeds, Blazing Star Wildflower Seed Company, Native Plant Society of Saskatchewan, Skinner Native Seeds, ALCLA Native Plants, Saskatchewan Environmental Society ACE Fund, and KT Honey. Earlier this summer, we undertook a survey of breeding birds in the Valley. Pictured here are 4 of our fantastic summer students hard at work surveying! 💪 There’s an endless amount of work to be done around here in the summertime, and our summer students play a huge role in our successes. Great job, team! 👏 A huge thanks goes to Trans Canada Trail | Sentier Transcanadien and our other supporting partners, whose contributions enable us to bring on such an amazing crew for the summer. #SummerStudents #SummerJob

Last Friday we hosted a Trail Opening Ceremony celebrating the completion of enhancements to Kiwanis Memorial Park South. The event marked the end of Phase 1 of the Downtown Site & Trail Enhancements Plan, a multi-year project slated to revitalize the Meewasin Trail from River Landing to Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan (https://lnkd.in/giGFVktw). This project wouldn't have been possible without the support of the Government of Canada, the Government of Saskatchewan, the City of Saskatoon, Trans Canada Trail | Sentier Transcanadien, and of course, the many individual donors that so generously contributed. Thank you to MLA Lisa Lambert, Councillor Bev Dubois, and Trans Canada Trail CEO Mathieu Roy for bringing remarks, Trans Canada Trail Director Robert Kuling for your support, and as always, Meewasin Board Chair Angela Bedard-Haughn and CEO Andrea Lafond for your continued leadership.
