About us

Membertou is an urban Mi’kmaw community surrounded by 100,000 people in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Membertou has close to 1,500 members and belongs to the greater tribal group of the Mi’kmaw Nation. It is one of five Mi’kmaw communities within the tribal district of Unama’ki (Cape Breton). In December of 2001, Membertou became the first Indigenous Government in Canada to achieve ISO 9001 certification. Membertou is committed to creating and enhancing business relationships between Membertou and the Canadian and international business community. The corporate strategy is built on the foundations of integrity and fairness, and a dedication to maximizing financial benefits for its partners and the Membertou community. Over the past 20 years Membertou has successfully diversified it's economy, creating many aboriginal economic development initiatives. Membertou owns and operates community businesses – 10 are exclusively owned by the community and 2 are partnerships. The Membertou Trade & Convention Centre, Membertou Market, Membertou Entertainment Centre, Membertou Business Centre, and the Hampton Inn are just a few of the community owned businesses in Membertou.
