The U.S. government has arrested a North Carolina man accused of making over $10 million by using AI to generate "instant" music, uploading it to streaming platforms, and using more than 10,000 fake accounts to inflate streams and rake in streaming revenue. He allegedly created random song and artist names, designed to sound legitimate, using names like "Calm Identity" and "Zygotic Washstands," among thousands of others, giving the operation an air of authenticity. According to Variety, the Mechanical Licensing Collective—a nonprofit that ensures musicians receive royalties from streaming—became suspicious of the billions of streams linked to his accounts in 2023. After investigating, the organization confronted him, though he denied any involvement in wrongdoing. Now, he faces up to 20 years in prison for each charge. NVIDIA is under scrutiny following leaked documents revealing its extensive practice of scraping videos from platforms like YouTube and Netflix to train its upcoming video foundational model. Internally known as the "Cosmos" project, NVIDIA reportedly downloads 80 years’ worth of videos daily using the open-source tool yt-dlp. This project aims to create a video foundation model capable of simulating light transport, physics, and intelligence for various applications. When employees raised concerns about copyright issues, management assured them that the practice was an “executive decision” approved at the highest levels. The company maintains that its actions comply with copyright law, arguing that using copyrighted material for AI training may be considered "fair use." However, both Google and Netflix have expressed concerns. Google stated that using YouTube content for AI training violates its terms of service, while a Netflix spokesperson confirmed there is no agreement for NVIDIA to use their content. #AI #NVIDIA #AITraining #AIVideoModel

OpenAI Partners with U.S. AI Safety Institute for Early ChatGPT-5 Access OpenAI has teamed up with the U.S. AI Safety Institute to provide early access to ChatGPT-5, aiming to ensure safety and reliability before its public release. The partnership, announced by CEO Sam Altman, reflects a commitment to rigorous AI safety standards. The U.S. AI Safety Institute, created by NIST, will help evaluate the model's safety. This move follows recent changes at OpenAI, including the disbandment of its Superalignment team and the departure of key members. OpenAI has also pledged 20% of computing resources to safety and removed non-disparagement clauses from employee contracts. This collaboration is part of a broader trend of AI developers working with regulators to address safety concerns and is complemented by OpenAI's recent appointment of General Paul M. Nakasone to its board to enhance security and governance. #ai #chatgpt #aitools #openai #USGOVERMENT #USIT #SAMALTMAN

Microsoft’s relationship with OpenAI has officially become more complicated. On Tuesday, Microsoft listed the AI startup as a competitor in its latest annual report, joining a roster that includes tech giants like Amazon, Apple, Google, and Meta. Despite their long-term partnership, with Microsoft serving as OpenAI’s exclusive cloud provider and integrating its AI models into products for commercial clients and consumers, this new classification marks a significant shift. Microsoft, the largest investor in OpenAI with a reported $13 billion investment, now acknowledges that they are stepping into each other's territories. #ai #chatgpt #aitools #openai #aitips #machinelearning

NVIDIA’s Project GR00T is addressing one of the most significant challenges in robotics—scaling up robot data. This innovative approach combines real-world demonstrations with advanced simulation techniques to exponentially multiply data. The process starts with a human operator using Apple Vision Pro to control a humanoid robot in first-person view, with hand movements translated to the robot in real-time. While initially slow, this method provides a base set of high-quality data. To expand this data, NVIDIA utilizes RoboCasa, a simulation framework that generates countless virtual environments with varying textures, furniture, and object placements. This allows the robot to “practice” in diverse settings, far beyond the confines of a single physical lab kitchen. Further data expansion is achieved through MimicGen, a technique that creates numerous new action trajectories based on the original human data while filtering out unsuccessful attempts. This combined approach enables NVIDIA to transform a single human demonstration into thousands of useful training examples. Credits: @nvidia from YouTube #AI #ProjectGR00T #NVIDIA #HumanoidRobot

A startup known for its personal AI “friend” product has made headlines due to an unusual financial decision. Founded by Avi Schiffmann, Friend raised approximately $2.5 million in funding and spent a significant portion—$1.8 million—on acquiring the domain name friend.com. The company is developing an AI-powered digital companion in the form of a necklace. This pendant, priced at $99, listens to conversations and sends supportive text messages to its owner. It is set to launch next year and aims to offer users a supportive and intelligent conversational companion. Securing a premium domain name is often seen as a way to enhance brand visibility and credibility, especially in the tech industry. Schiffmann believes this investment will save marketing costs in the long run. However, the scale of this expenditure has raised eyebrows, prompting questions about the company’s financial strategy and future sustainability. #ai #startup #domainname #investment
