Osteoporosis is a condition where the bones in the body lose density and strength, becoming porous and brittle over time. Unlike healthy bones, which are dense and resilient, osteoporotic bones are weaker and can break from seemingly minor incidents, especially falls. Bone density naturally peaks in young adulthood and gradually declines with age. However, for those with osteoporosis, this decline is faster and more severe, leaving bones vulnerable to fractures, which is why it is known as a "silent disease" because it often progresses without symptoms until a fracture occurs. The condition is widespread, with an estimated 200 million people affected worldwide. Osteoporosis has a variety of causes and risk factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, and lifestyle choices. Individuals with parents or siblings who have had osteoporosis, or fractures are at higher risk, hormonal changes, particularly a decline in estrogen during menopause for women and lower testosterone in men, contribute significantly to bone density loss, and lifestyle factors such as diet, physical activity, and habits like smoking or excessive alcohol consumption also affect bone health. Symptoms of Osteoporosis Osteoporosis is mostly asymptomatic until a fracture occurs. Sime of the initial signs include: • Back pain • Decreasing height • Stooped posture Common Fracture Sites: • Hip • Wrists • Spine Osteoporosis is a serious health condition that can lead to severe consequences if left untreated as fractures can impact mobility, independence, and overall quality of life, but with awareness, regular check-ups, and proactive lifestyle choices, individuals can take steps to protect their bone health. Early detection through regular bone density testing, combined with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and healthy habits, can help reduce the risk of osteoporosis and maintain bone strength as we age. Today is World Stroke Day, an annual day for stroke awareness activity around the world. Strokes are an increasing problem the older we get as about 75 percent of strokes occur in people 65 or older, and it has been estimated that the chance of having a stroke doubles every decade after 55. However, strokes can happen to anyone, at any age. In fact, globally about one in four adults over the age of 25 will have a stroke in their lifetime. That is why it is important to know the signs and keep F.A.S.T (Face Drooping, Arm Weakness, Speech Difficulty = Time to Call 911) in mind when someone around you may potentially be experiencing a stroke. This World Stroke day is aimed at focusing on the emotional power of sport to drive stroke awareness and to motivate everyone to take daily action to reduce our stroke risk. Today marks the start of Canadian Patient Safety Week, an annual campaign running from October 28th - November 1st that aims to inspire extraordinary improvements in healthcare safety and quality. This year we are focusing on broadening our understanding of healthcare harm. Healthcare harm matters to those receiving and delivering care, and it is also important to emphasize that harm is not just physical, it can be psychological, social and spiritual as well. Learning to recognize and reduce healthcare harm is essential to creating safety for everyone. Today is World Mental Health Day, a day aimed to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health. Over the years, this day has gained momentum, becoming a platform for governments, organizations, and individuals to develop initiatives that focus on various aspects of mental health care. Among the older population, around 14% of adults aged 60 and over live with a mental disorder, and these conditions account for 10.6% of the total disability among older adults with the most common mental health conditions being depression and anxiety. Mental health conditions experienced by seniors are often under-recognized and under-treated, and the stigma surrounding these conditions can make people reluctant to seek help. Make sure to check in on the mental state of your loved ones and to reach out whenever you are struggling with your own mental health. Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities, and the commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process. Today is also Orange Shirt Day, which is an initiative that began through the story of Residential School Survivor Phyllis Webstad, who had her new orange shirt confiscated by school staff on her first day of residential school at 6 years old. The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations. Wear an orange shirt today to help raise awareness about the individual, family and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools, to promote the idea “Every Child Matters”, and to honour the many Survivors of residential schools. The final day of the AlayaCare Better Outcomes conference was a great ending to the 3 day event. We continued to learn a lot especially on what health care looks like from a global perspective with Naom Monari, who has done a great deal to bring health care to low-income Kenyan communities. Not only that but we got to hear the experiences of front line caregivers who have made great impacts and lasting impressions within the home healthcare field which was very heart warming and inspirational. Overall, Better Outcomes 2024 was one for the books and Mount Sinai Home Healthcare Services is grateful to have been an exhibitor this year! Looking forward to what's in store for AlayaCare and home healthcare as a whole come 2025. #homehealthcare #mshhsifamily #seniorcare #alayacare #BetterOutcomes2024

Better Outcomes Day 2 was a very insightful one, with many keynote presentations and discussions focusing on the future of home healthcare, the interdisciplinary nature of home healthcare, and growth strategies for home healthcare businesses. We also had some closer discussion via breakout rooms tailored to the individual strengths we bring to the industry. Finally, we ended the day by celebrating the 10th anniversary of AlayaCare, and indulged in plenty of socializing, dancing, and singing which was a blast! #homehealthcare #mshhsifamily #seniorcare #alayacare #BetterOutcomes2024
