MusiCounts is Canada's music education charity associated with CARAS and the JUNO Awards.

About us

MusiCounts is Canada's music education charity associated with CARAS and the JUNO Awards. MusiCounts' vision is to ensure that all youth in Canada have access to music education through their schools and communities. This vision is realized through grant programs that invest directly into schools and communities across Canada that put musical instruments into the hands of kids who need them the most. Additionally, MusiCounts creates educational resources for teachers and students; empowers young people to pursue music as a career; and celebrates teachers, artists, and philanthropists who champion music education. MusiCounts is funded by many of Canada's most dedicated individuals, events, and corporate citizens. Since 1997 MusiCounts has awarded over $16,000,000 in support of music education in Canada. These funds have benefitted nearly 1,300 schools and communities, supported over 400 post-secondary music program graduates, and honoured 17 extraordinary music teachers and six MusiCounts Inspired Mind ambassadors.

The latest MusiCounts teaching resource is live! This past weekend we launched Wîtaskîwin: Guiding Principles for Respectful Partnerships with Indigenous Peoples in Canadian Music Classrooms. This FREE teacher resource, created by the amazing Sherryl Sewepagaham and Nicole Schutz, is intended to guide music educators in Canada through the process of understanding Indigenous Peoples and provides steps to consider when inviting and working collaboratively alongside local Indigenous Elders, Knowledge Keepers and Culture Bearers. Please share with any music educators in your orbit!

As educators work to decolonize the music classroom, MusiCounts is offering a new FREE resource to help. Wîtaskîwin encourages teachers to look beyond "ready-made" Indigenous music resources to build respectful, meaningful partnerships with Indigenous communities. Wîtaskîwin (pronounced as wee-tuus-kee-win) is a Plains Cree word meaning "having good relations". This resource was authored by Nicole Schutz and Sherryl Sewepagaham. This past weekend I had the incredible opportunity to travel with my Anthem Entertainment family and MusiCounts to Yellowknife to speak with the 2024 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Stephen Richardson’s class about working in the music industry. This has truly been the trip of a lifetime for me. Coming from a small town, I was always told growing up that working in the music industry was not a “realistic career” and was pressured by every adult in my life to choose a different career path. I can’t express how full-circle it was for me to speak to these kids and let them know that success in this industry is possible, and so incredibly rewarding. Teachers like Stephen are so important, and I am so happy that his students have an environment where they are supported in all of their creative endeavours, and are told to dream incredibly big! I start off every new year with a vision/manifestation board, and one of my big ones was to be a panelist. I’m beyond happy that I got to speak on three separate panels during this trip, especially with such an incredible charity like MusiCounts. I am so grateful to work for a company like Anthem. It wasn’t too long ago where I was in the same boat as these highschool kids, dreaming of growing up and moving out of my small town and working in the music industry. I can honestly say that working for Anthem, I wake up every morning and I’m so thankful that I love what I do. This trip was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never stop talking about or forget for the rest of my life, and I’m so happy I got to have such a great group to experience it with! Photo during our Aurora Borealis tour and my 2024 vision board posted for the good vibes, and to remind you all to dream big! #MusicEducation #DreamJob #MusicIndustry #MusicCharity #DreamTeam

"From Ecole St Joseph School in Yellowknife, Stephen Richardson was selected as the 2024 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year award. Richardson takes a very unique approach to teaching music in his class. Not only does he allow and encourage his students to write their own songs, but he will also take images from film and video games, and have his students create their own score to replace the existing music" — Read more here 🔗 (https://lnkd.in/drcMwSGf)

Tonight, I had the privilege of volunteering at Canada's Great Kitchen Party , where incredible chefs competed for a spot at the Canadian Culinary Championship. This cause is close to my heart, as I’ve personally experienced the special community that Stephen Leckie , and Karen Blair have created during one of their Great Kitchen Party trips to Spain. Their mission is to ensure that young people across the country have equitable access to music education, sports opportunities, and healthy food, through the support of organizations like MusiCounts , Spirit North and Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society . It’s important to me Vancouver’s youth have the chance to enjoy a full life enriched by hobbies, sports, and music! Cheers to a great event👏
