Leadership strategies that motivate, inspire, and engage.

About us

We started as an HR Consulting firm, but as we worked with organizational leaders and business owners, a pattern emerged. We realized that companies with strong leadership had better cultures and fewer HR issues. So we began focusing our efforts on growing leadership skills alongside our HR support. We’ve seen this result in confident leaders who handle their HR issues and lead their teams in powerful and effective ways. This strengthens organizations and increases their bottom line. Smart HR offers both HR services and leadership development, serving clients in a number of different (for and not for profit) industries, including education, health services, retail, family businesses, First Nations, recreation, tech, publishing, and service-oriented companies.

On the precipice of a bold new adventure in business and in life, I find myself feeling 60 parts excited, 30 parts terrified, and 10 parts "can I really do this?" As an Olympics junkie, I'm feeling a bit of a sadness this week after the end of 19 days of watching trial and triumph, victory and defeat, and a coming together of the world in a unique and inspiring way. But the stories of perseverance, going after your dreams, not giving up and fighting through the doubt and fear have made me willing to consider this new path. There's an old adage, "the journey of a thousand miles starts with one step", and while it states the obvious, it acknowledges that the thousand mile journey seems impossible when you're at the starting line. So as I move into this new exploration, I'm reminded of the lessons from watching champions all around the world go for their gold. 1. The dream is there for a reason - it belongs to you and you owe it to yourself to go after it. 2. You don't have to be perfect to start. You don't have to have all your ducks in a row or money in the bank or all the people on your team. You just have to take one step. 3. There will always be naysayers and people who tell you that you can't. You're too young, too old, too inexperienced, too experienced, too late, too early. Only you know when the time is right. Don't listen to them. 4. It's going to be hard. Nothing of value comes without struggle, stress and strain. You can't short-cut your way through it. These things build the resilience you need to keep going at mile 847 when you feel like quitting. 5. Surround yourself with a team. No one can go it alone. You need coaches, cheerleaders, big shoulders to cry on, people to vent with, competitors to sharpen your skills alongside, wise mentors, friends who tell you the truth, and people who want you to see your goal as much as you do. It takes a village. So here's to the adventure! I'm strapping on my running shoes and seeing where that first step takes me!

  • Recent news has highlighted the negative impact of delivering layoffs via email, underscoring the need for leaders to prioritize soft skills and be more considerate of their staff. Communicating layoffs through direct, empathetic conversations—whether in person or through a personal call—acknowledges the emotional impact on employees and helps maintain trust and morale, which are crucial for a positive workplace culture. Handling such sensitive matters with care supports affected employees and reinforces a respectful and humane environment, benefiting the entire organization. A compassionate workplace culture fosters loyalty, reduces anxiety, and promotes a supportive atmosphere, all of which are essential for long-term success and employee satisfaction. By prioritizing empathy and direct communication, leaders can navigate difficult decisions while preserving the integrity and well-being of their workforce. Leading with empathy and prioritizing respect in all professional interactions can significantly benefit organizations, creating a more supportive and resilient work environment. #SmartLeadership #MySmartHR #EmpathyInTheWorkplace

  • As leaders, one of the most exciting moments is spotting someone with a gift for innovation and thinking outside the box. It's not just a talent; it's a game-changer for your team and organization. So, what should you do when you recognize this skill in a team member? First, give them the freedom to explore their ideas. Innovation thrives in an environment where creativity is encouraged and mistakes are seen as learning opportunities. Set up brainstorming sessions, innovation workshops, or simply encourage them to share their ideas in team meetings. Your job is to provide the support and resources they need to experiment and innovate. Next, involve them in diverse teams and projects. Innovation gets better with different perspectives. By placing your creative thinker in various contexts, you help them solve different challenges and broaden their own horizons. Encourage cross-functional collaboration so they can interact with different departments and gain new insights. This enriches their thinking and fosters a collaborative spirit within your organization. Finally, recognize and reward their efforts. Innovation often means long hours and overcoming many obstacles, so it's important to acknowledge their hard work. Public recognition, opportunities for professional development, and mentorship roles are great ways to show appreciation. Make sure they know their contributions are valued and that they have a clear path for growth within your organization. By nurturing the innovative talent in your team, you're not only helping them grow but also driving your whole team towards greater creativity and success. #SmartInnovation #SmartLeadership #MySmartHR
