N'Dinawemak is an Indigenous-led community resource offering 24/7 warming space in Winnipeg.

About us

N’Dinawemak was formed in November 2021 by a circle of partners who came together to provide a low-barrier, 24/7 emergency warming shelter. During the winter, N’Dinawemak had a bed capacity of 100 which expanded to 150 beds and was filled daily. The drop-in was open 24/7 during the winter and supported an additional 50 – 70 individuals overnight. With the harsh winter conditions experienced during the 2021/22 winter, N’Dinawemak is credited by community members and service delivery agencies with contributing to saving multiple lives. N’Dinawemak has continued operations as an emergency shelter and drop-in centre with a plan to introduce transitionary housing in 2024!

  • Our community Care Team is gaining momentum!! At N'Dinawemak we believe that engaging homeless camps is best done on foot, making connections and friends along the way. Engagement is not about limited infrequent contacts but building relationships that encourage people in camps to connect to services. Our Community Care Team is led by Relatives. Some of our August statistics include: - We completed 12 walks in August - 8 new Relatives joined us on our walks - 8 new volunteers from outside agencies joined us - 200 volunteer hours in August - 9400 liters of garbage picked up - 640 needles, bubbles and pipes disposed of - 360 community connections made - 10 People (Relatives) who never heard of us but now they do!! photo used with permission. #volunteersareawesome #loveoneanother #doitonyourfeet

A huge problem with camps, and what often gets them in conflict with authorities, is the accumulation of trash. Occupants of the camp have no way to dispose of trash so it tends to accumulate and create fire and health hazards. We chose to do something about that! The N'Dinawemak - Our Relatives' Place Community Care Team joined forces with the Downtown Community Safety Partnership (DCSP) Winnipeg Winnipeg Clean Slate Team and Siloam Mission M.O.S.T. for a community clean-up along the Red River. We managed to fill up three large commercial bins with garbage and connected with many of our relatives, providing them with sandwiches and water. The N'Dinawemak Community Care Team is out every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:30am-1:00pm with plans to increase operations! #helpthehomeless #communityleaders #showsomelove

N'Dinawemak is proud to be a part of supporting our Relatives as they transition into programs and receive the medical care they deserve. Manitoba is allocating the money this year and next year to support a comprehensive action plan with key initiatives including: Expanding support for the Downtown Community Safety Partnership (DCSP) to enhance visibility downtown this summer. Increasing funding for mental health training for downtown partners providing mental health and well-being services. Establishing a sobering centre at N’Dinawemak. “N’Dinawemak is excited to continue to work with the Manitoba government to deliver services that directly respond to the needs of our relatives,” said Frank Parkes, Executive Director, N’Dinawemak.

  • The Community Care Team is unique among other volunteer-led foot patrols in Winnipeg, as our volunteer base is supported almost entirely by our relatives who stay at and/or access resources from N’dinawemak. The purpose of the Community Care Team is not only to engage our relatives who do not (regularly) use services at N’dinawemak, but of equal importance, is to foster a sense of purpose, belonging and community for our volunteers. We now have a small team of dedicated volunteers who come to nearly every patrol, rain or shine. These volunteers regularly contribute ideas; share their joy in seeing the difference made already in the community, and how they enjoy being part of something positive. • N’Dinawemak is proud to share that this year we’ve been selected by #RunThePeg100 2024 as their host charity. The support of our community and the amazing volunteers in our city are what makes us great and the support of #runthepeg100 2024 is truly appreciated. They have started a Gofundme page so you can contribute!! Our goal is to raise $10,000.00 and you can help! Founded in 2022 by a group of passionate runners who would like to serve the community. #runthepeg100 is a fundraiser of running 100 km around Winnipeg in one day to raise awareness of the unsheltered neighbors. In 2022 & 2023 #runthepeg100 raised over $12k to support the unsheltered community. N’Dinawemak has amazing relatives who volunteer everyday to make our shelter a better place for all who visit. 100% of the donations will go towards supporting our relatives who give back daily. Our relatives will benefit with art supplies, drum kits, cultural outings and teachings and opportunities to work with our Community Care Team. Volunteering is the pathway to employment at N’Dinawemak and your donations will directly support those who need it most!! Check out the Eventbrite page here to join: https://lnkd.in/gedq_emV... • What a great day for Indigenous people in Canada and Manitoba!

  • This Saturday 12pm Winnipeg Manitoba. Our 3rd annual Unity Walk will take place starting from True North Square. The Unity Walk is a gathering of all of the community patrols and groups to gather in a show of solidarity and to show our city that there are hundreds of us who put on our boots regularly to help others. The Unity Walk is also a way to show that we need support! After years of volunteering I can tell you that it is really tough to get funding for people who walk around doing good. Even with international recognition, groups like Bear Clan still have to continually search for grants and other ways to get funds for staffing. Corporate partners have been awesome for supplies and donations but support is still needed for wages. See you Saturday! Volunteering might not change the world but you can change someone's day and if we change enough people's days then we can change the world. #volunteeringmakeschange. #Canadahelps #donate

  • Drug deaths continue to rise across the country. The more you know the more you can help.

The recent politicization of the BC drug crisis will certainly stir up some folks and get a few votes to move either to the left or right. One thing is clear, when the drug crisis becomes a platform issue it will result in more deaths. Elected officials, in pursuit of the fringe votes, are some of the biggest spreaders of misinformation on drug deaths. #harmreductionworks #addictionisnotacrime #loveoneanother
