Congratulations to the dedicated Bruce Power and Nordion workers who have successfully completed the 2024 Cobalt Harvest at Bruce B. Thanks to their work, large volumes of Cobalt-60 will be exported from Ontario around the World to sterilize medical equipment keeping our hospitals clean and safe. They also successfully harvested a unique type of Cobalt-60 that is used in non-invasive cancer treatments. Immensely proud of this team who completed this work safely, effectively and with a high standard of care. This is 'Made in Ontario' at its best. #ThrowbackThursday Historically, Canada has been a major contributor to the research, production, and innovation of isotope technologies. In 1988, a postage stamp was made to commemorate the pioneering development of External Beam Radiation Therapy using cobalt-60. Canada's AECL NRU research reactor produced this valuable Co-60, essential for medical equipment.

Students from our Directorate of Environmental and Radiation Protection and Assessment recently had a unique learning opportunity to visit two nuclear facilities in Ottawa: BWXT Medical and Nordion. They learned about the development, manufacturing, and supply of products for industrial sterilization, cancer therapy, diagnostic imaging and radiotherapeutic treatments. BWX Technologies, Inc. _____ Des étudiantes de notre Direction de l’évaluation et de la protection environnementales et radiologiques ont récemment eu l’occasion unique de visiter 2 installations nucléaires à Ottawa: BWXT Medical et Nordion. Elles y ont découvert le développement, la fabrication et l’approvisionnement de produits destinés à la stérilisation industrielle, au traitement du cancer, à l’imagerie diagnostique et aux traitements radiothérapeutiques.

Yesterday, at the 2024 Canadian Nuclear Society 43rd Annual Conference, CNIC Executive Director, Andrew Thiele, was privileged to moderate a session with leaders from the industry to discuss "Nuclear Beyond Electricity - Isotopes & their Applications". Thank you to the speakers who were able to participate in this important conversation; Ram Mullur VP, CNL Isotopes Business and President, Actineer, Jenna Smith-Windsor from Environmental Analytical Laboratories SRC, Michael Aube from Nordion, and John Burta from Laurentis Energy Partners. Another thank-you goes to Aleana Young, MLA of Regina University, for dedicating her time to discuss important matters to the CNIC.

WiN Eastern Ontario members enjoyed technical tours of BWXT Medical Ltd. and Nordion this past Friday in both morning and afternoon sessions. Participants had the opportunity to see the development, manufacturing, and supply of products for industrial sterilization, cancer therapy, diagnostic imaging and radiotherapeutic treatments.
