Have you heard of Miyawaki forests? This method has gained popularity due to its quick results, minimal maintenance, and adaptability to small urban spaces, making it a promising solution for cities aiming to boost climate resilience. After all, the method was born from Japan’s era of industrial pollution and extraction. The Miyawaki method, developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki in the early 1970s, focuses on rapid reforestation by planting dense clusters of native trees and understory plants. The method is gaining interest lately and is being tested in different applications around the globe, including a network of community planted “mini-forests” across Canada. So far, there are nearly a dozen in Ontario and Quebec, with plans in the works for many more across the country. The process involves selecting native species, improving the soil, and planting three seedlings per square meter to mimic natural forest growth. Check out our latest blog post on the Miyawaki Method to learn more about how it works, where it can be applied, and just how quickly it can transform a small space into a mature forest. https://lnkd.in/gB6rvT_q *Infographic from Canadian Geographic*

In light of the recent strike mandate announced by Canada Post, we have temporarily paused our lettermail shipping option. With a potential labour disruption as early as November 3rd, we made this proactive decision to avoid any delays to your orders. Our online store remains fully operational, and we are working through onboarding a new courier in the next few days. However, we recognize that this will mean higher shipping costs for our customers, and we thank you for your understanding during this time. To help offset these changes, we’re pleased to offer discounted shipping on orders over $80. You can also find our products in-store at over 100 retail locations across Canada. Be sure to check here to confirm your local retailer has what you need in stock. https://lnkd.in/gDxZJ_vW Lettermail has been the most popular and economical shipping option for our customer across Canada- as such this situation is already impacting us. We’re hopeful for a quick resolution, especially as we approach one of the most crucial sales periods for Canadian businesses. Thank you for your understanding and continued support. #RetailCanada #EcommerceCanada #SupportLocal #ShippingUpdate #NorthernWildflowers #SmallBusiness #SupportSmallBusiness

We want to share a very cool resource from Seeds of Diversity we just learned about! Over the last 3.5 years, Youth in Food Systems has facilitated online content creation projects, now called the Peer Led Food Media Creation. Each project offers a unique opportunity for youth participants to research and write about food topics of interest to them, and to publish what they’ve learned and created on public platforms for their peers to engage with. The youth blog is one of these projects. It has produced, on average, two food- and sustainability-related articles each and every week since April 2021. Check it out! https://lnkd.in/e4Mj5V4Y #FoodTopics #PeerLedProjects #OnlineLearning #SeedsOfDiversity #FoodBlog #YouthEmpowerment #Sustainability #FoodEducation

#DYK there are bumblebees in the arctic? Let’s meet one of our favourite Canadian pollinators, the Polar Bumblebee (Bombus polaris). One of two bumblebees that live above the arctic circle, this species has some interesting adaptations that allow it to survive in such a challenging environment. With a shorter growing season sometimes only one month long, less flowering plants available to feed on, and extreme low temperatures, it’s impressive to find bumblebees in these regions. Polar Bumbebees are larger and have a thicker coat of hair than others in the genus, and they are better at thermoregulation within their bodies and their nests. They also make insulated nests and are able to make longer flights to access scarce food sources. Polar bumblebees have a larger initial brood laying larger clutches of eggs in general as an adaptation to speed up the colony cycle in the very short growing season. #polarwildlife #arctic #pollinators #bumblebees #ArcticEcosystem #WildlifeConservation #ArcticPollinators #BumblebeeAdaptations #PollinatorFacts
