About us

Northwood is Nova Scotia’s original senior citizen advocate, dating back to 1962. Since that time, we have led the way as Nova Scotia’s most dynamic continuing care organization committed to innovation and change. We are the largest not-for-profit continuing care organization in Atlantic Canada and are recognized both here at home and across Canada as an extraordinary example of the power of social justice, but we like to call it the power of love! When life changes, and society changes, Northwood leads the way, incorporating revolutionary designed, responsive care. From new ideas to new technologies, we are empowered to do this, because our focus is on people, not on profit margins. Northwood is a full spectrum health, lifestyle and continuing care organization with a staff of more than 1,700. We are continuously recognized as a great place to work, with the distinction of being one of Nova Scotia’s Top Employers as well as a Top Employer in Atlantic Canada. These special designations recognize employers who lead their industries in offering exceptional places to work.

  • Northwood Among the First Continuing Care Nurses Trained to Prescribe Medications. We're continuing to celebrate our five nurses from Northwood and Shoreham Village, who participated in and graduated from Nova Scotia's pioneering RN-AP initiative that trained nurses to be able to prescribe medicines for persons in continuing care. There is also a second group of continuing care nurses that have started the program in early January, and a third will start in this fall. Graduates from this Dalhousie University program can prescribe medications for common health conditions and ailments such as urinary tract infections, nausea and dermatitis. They can also renew prescriptions. Northwood is always eager to collaborate with our partners in academia, provincial health systems and the nursing community so we can continue to be at the forefront of continuing care. We are so proud of our nurses, Holly, Rebecca, Emily, Gemma, and Nelli. Read more in the Nova Scotia government's announcement this week: https://lnkd.in/e7kyQEbw

  • Join us in celebrating International Education Day and Northwood Career College Education is the foundation of peace, development, and a brighter future for all. At Northwood, we are proud to play a role in this global mission by empowering the next generation of caregivers through learning, compassion, and community. Our Northwood Career College (NCC) students are the embodiment of this vision. Under the guidance of Margaret Leveck, our dedicated CCA Clinical Instructor, these students are embarking on their 110-hour skills development placement at our Bedford Campus. Their journey is not just about learning—it’s about creating a world where care and connection lead the way. Education for peace and development starts here. As these future Continuing Care Assistants develop skills, they’re also fostering empathy, building meaningful relationships, and becoming advocates for dignity and respect. To our incredible NCC students: Your work goes beyond careers. It’s a mission to touch lives, a calling to be part of a story greater than your own, and a privilege to bring care and hope to others. This International Education Day, we recommit to the belief that education is a human right, a public good, and a powerful force for building inclusive, sustainable communities. Together, let’s build a future where care, excellence, and opportunity thrive for all.
