Some situations require leaders to have more than facts and figures to make decisions. There are times when leaders have to, for instance, decide whether to lay off team members to stay on track financially. Who do you pick to get laid off? Or, what if a product has reportedly harmed a few people? Should the product be pulled from certain markets or all markets? Ethical decisions require putting values into action, making decisions that are going to balance competing priorities (for employees, clients, investors and the public) with what is right and moral. The fallout from these kinds of decisions can affect how the organization is perceived by employees, other stakeholders and by the public at large. Mishandling of ethical decisions can be a public relations nightmare.
