About us
Patkau Architects is an innovative architecture and design research studio based in Vancouver, Canada. There are currently four principals: John Patkau, Patricia Patkau, Greg Boothroyd, and David Shone; three senior associates: Peter Suter, Michael Thorpe, and Mike Green; and three associates: Katy Young, Tom Schroeder, and Dimitri Koubatis. In over 44 years of practice, we have been responsible for the design of a wide variety of project types for a diverse range of clients. Projects vary in scale from gallery installations to master planning, from houses to major urban libraries and galleries. Many projects have involved functional programming, management of detailed public processes, and design of complex buildings and sites. The practice is also actively engaged in architectural research. Our current work explores the potential resulting from the response of materials to applications of force. A compedium of these investigations will be publised in Patkau Architects: Material Operations, a forthcoming book published by Princeton Architectural Press. Current work includes the School of Biomedical Engineering at UBC's Vancouver campus; the Thunder Bay Art Gallery in Thunder Bay, Ontario; Kiweki Point in Ottawa; as well as several private commercial and residential projects. As the circumstances of the work change, our interests expand. We seek to explore the full richness and diversity of architectural practice, understanding it as a critical cultural act that engages our most fundamental desires and aspirations. We refuse singular definitions of architecture: as art, as technology, as social service, as environmental agent, as political statement. We embrace all these definitions, together, as part of the rich, complex and vital discipline that we believe architecture to be.

Our new pedestrian bridge from Major's Hill Park to Kiweki Point has a restrained expression as there is plenty of iconic architecture nearby. It's under construction but opening soon! Although the U of M’s ARTlab is formally ambitious, the rooms inside are simple, carefully designed spaces for art. For the primary gallery, we meticulously refined every dimension with then-director Paul Hess. Arbour House is featured in this year's Architectural Record magazine's Record Houses—the first Canadian house in 8 years! Located in Victoria, BC, Canada.
In the living room of Arbour House, a recently completed residence by Patkau Architects in Victoria, British Columbia, sunshine enters through skylights above a folded lattice of hemlock struts and forms patterns that glide slowly across the fireplace wall. Full-height retractable glazing along the front of the house has been drawn aside so that the space flows uninterrupted to a Garry oak–framed view of a bay in the Salish Sea. As the sun crosses the sky, the patterns on the wall eventually vanish, and the space becomes simply luminous. I’m sitting on a sofa in the midst of this—the trees, the water, the light, and air that characterize this city’s connection with its landscape—and I’m wondering if anyone would notice if I just . . . stayed. Emerging from my reverie, I ask John Patkau, sitting opposite me, if he’d like to say something about critical regionalism. (Architectural historian and critic Kenneth Frampton, who coined the term, has long cited the work of Patkau Architects as an example.) “That’s something that’s always been meaningful to us,” Patkau says. Although to avoid the possible connotation that the firm is defined by a single region, “instead we talk about ‘found potential’ as one of our guiding principles,” he says, “and that means that you look for circumstances of the site that allow you to develop an architecture.” In embodying some of the quintessential experiences of living in Victoria—time by the water, light through the trees, gathering outdoors with friends—Arbour House epitomizes that approach. A key early design decision for UBC's School of Biomedical Engineering was to preserve a row of mature London plane trees. We're beginning to see the benefits in this construction photo!
