Design Services

Rooted in principles of relationality, we view design as a vehicle for liberation and regeneration.

About us

Pause and Effect is a decolonial design and research think tank. We offer transformative, application based learning experiences, and strategic consulting for design and research teams. At Pause and Effect, we believe that transformation begins with what we practice. We lean into discomfort by examining our own complicity within systems of harm. We learn to get intimate with our restlessness, fragility, and fear of the unknown. We create intentional space for chaos, and embrace it as an essential process for liberatory dreaming. We emphasize authentic relationships with each other and listen with all senses of the body, mind and spirit.

Our experiences on this planet point to a truth that is often overlooked in the world of "research". That there are ways of knowing which engage the senses and the spiritual, the ancestral, and the invisible. I'm so excited to be collaborating with Zemina Meghji from un.seen.futures to offer this session on "Researching with the Unseen". This will be a playful and interactive exploration into alternative ways of knowing, limited to only 14 participants. Join us here: https://lnkd.in/gdAf2M5h

Registration for Reimagining Research closes this Sunday! We are so excited to kick off two incredible cohorts next week. This course is for researchers who are ready to challenge the status quo. You do not need to be a “professional” or academic researcher to benefit from this program. In our view, research is the practice of responsible inquiry, knowledge gathering, and sharing. If you're a researcher who: 🌱 Cares about your impact on people, the planet, and systems 🌱 Is ready and willing to hospice colonial approaches and welcome alternative ways of thinking and practicing. 🌱 Believes that research can be collaborative, mutually beneficial, and joyful 🌱 Is looking for a community of practice to learn and experiment with ...then this 5 week cohort could be right for you! You can learn more about the program at https://lnkd.in/g3uwijxU. I welcome DMs with questions, to support you in making an informed decision.

Reimagining Research is just around the corner and we're super excited to welcome a diverse cohort of folks who are ready to transform the status quo and shape the future of research. This 5 week cohort is designed to stretch your imagination and help you think expansively about what research could look like when practiced with care and relationality. Many of our past participants shared how this experience allowed them the space to play and experiment with what a care-full and relational practice of learning and inquiry could look like. There's still time to register and sign up: https://lnkd.in/g4y8gXJY

    • “This course taught me a lot about the ways standard practice, hyper-efficiency, and urgency can diminish participant experiences but also the research process as a whole. You gave me space to imagine how abundant research can be for both participants and researchers when we slow down and incorporate care in all components of our work.”

We're less than a month away from Reimagining Research and this is an opportunity you do not want to miss. Research should be an embodied and care-full practice that creates space for shared inquiry and learning. An integral part of this learning cohort is experiencing the ways in which care, relationality, and embodiment are modeled and practiced in how we bring people together. Many of our past participants shared how this experience allowed them to actively shift their own research practices to be more relational and transformative. • “Reimagining Research really challenged me to see what it could look like, sound like, and feel like to engage in research with a depth of care and humanity I honestly had never seen modeled in my career. It truly challenged me to question everything more and see the downstream effects of our actions with greater clarity and understanding.”

Research doesn't have to be so serious! It can be fun, artistic, playful. We've mechanized research so much that we've lost our own joy and imagination. Dream with us. What if learning about each other, ourselves and the world around us felt healing, liberating, and playful? We'll be experimenting and exploring possibilities through our 5 week Reimagining Research cohort, starting September 12. Info on how to register or how to help us offer scholarships to QTBIPOC and disabled kin are in the comments! 🙏🏽
