On August 23, 1876 in Fort Carlton, Saskatchewan, Treaty No. 6 was signed. Treaty No. 6 stretches through the beautiful prairie plains of Alberta and Saskatchewan, and is where many of the pipikwan pêhtâkwan staff call home. Since 2013, August 23 has been recognized by the City of Edmonton as Treaty No. 6 Recognition Day. In 2022, pipikwan pêhtâkwan was able to support the Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 First Nations with the planning and execution of the unveiling of the Treaty No. 6 Monument at the Alberta Legislature grounds.

Over the past three years, Michelle Lean has been a mentor, a leader, and a friend. Equipped with the patience and kindness of a saint, and the fullest heart, she is intelligent and brings so much experience and skill to the communications team. She's extremely funny - which is a testament to her intelligence. We love a good Auntie Michelle joke to keep the mood just right. She's a natural leader and provides feedback to her team in such a loving and kind way that helps them learn, grow and succeed. What would we do without her? Three years with Michelle on our team is three years of GREAT experiences. Thank you for being you, Michelle!

Located at the former Sands Inn & Suites in Ward Métis of amiskwacîwâskahikan, Pimatisiwin is the first facility of its kind in Treaty No. 6 Territory, providing supportive housing and shelter in the same space. “At Pimatisiwin, we strive to meet people where they’re at,” says NiGiNan Housing Ventures CEO Keri Cardinal. “We follow an Indigenous recovery model, guided by the four natural laws of kindness, honesty, sharing and strength. In doing so, we provide as much love, care and support as possible. We keep people housed and connected to their recovery journey by building relationships and practicing Indigenous ways of knowing and being – Ceremony is at the core of everything we do.”

Today is United Nations International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. Every year, the UN marks this day with a theme and 2024's theme is Protecting the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in Voluntary Isolation and Initial Contact. To commemorate today, we're not only thinking about our kin who choose to continuing living in pre-contact ways and deserve the right to do so, but we are thinking about how our actions impact others; directly and indirectly. In our fast-paced, post-contact world it is easy to forget that we are all interconnected, but our connection to the land, the sky, the water, animals, cosmos, and each other is still there and always will be. To learn more about today, visit https://lnkd.in/ghR-5Zv and read the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP).

As July draws to an end, we proudly reflect on some of our achievements from the first half of 2024! We excelled in Engagement with the AFPA Work Wild Youth Engagement, achieved significant milestones in Communications by receiving an IABC Capital Award of Excellence for our impactful Decolonizing Communications Training workshops, and saw impressive outcomes from our Creative team with the Canadian Council of Indigenous Business rebrand. Our successes in Media Relations with the renaming of the Oliver community in Edmonton to wîhkwêntôwin, and the collaboration with our Creative team and Rupertsland Institute's (RLI) first ever Métis 2SLGBTQIA+ Gathering further demonstrates our team's dedication. We welcomed new teammates, enjoyed a staff retreat, attended numerous conferences, and celebrated our team's personal milestones. Congratulations to the pipikwan team, our journey together through the first half of the year has been nothing short of amazing! Looking forward to what the second half of the year has in store for us.✨ aiy hiy
