The Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA)
International Affairs
A coalition of governments and businesses working to advance the transition away from unabated coal power generation.
About us
The Powering Past Coal Alliance (PPCA) is a coalition of national and sub-national governments, businesses and organisations working to advance the transition from unabated coal power generation to clean energy. The PPCA aims to: - secure commitments from governments and the private sector to phase out existing unabated coal power; - encourage a global moratorium on the construction of new unabated coal-fired power plants; - shift investment from coal to clean energy, including by working to restrict financing for coal-fired projects; - achieve coal phase-out in a sustainable and economically inclusive way, including appropriate support for workers and communities. Since its launch by the UK and Canadian governments at COP23 in 2017, the PPCA has been increasing its reach and influence. It currently has over 100 members who are playing a pivotal role in driving global coal phase-out efforts.

Here’s what we learned from our Solutions Dialogue in Singapore last week – in partnership with Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) and Bloomberg Philanthropies. ⚡Every Coal to Clean transition is country specific. 📈New Studies show renewables can meet growing energy demands without fossil fuels. 📜Clear government signals are key to unlocking private finance – governments can provide certainty through commitments, policies and plans. ⏩ Action is already underway in the APAC region: - Governments including Malaysia and the Philippines are developing new renewables targets and policies at pace. - Banks and MDBs are stepping forward to express their interest in financing early retirement of coal plants. - The Market Authority of Singapore is looking to create the frameworks that will make this possible, and exciting new pilot projects are being developed.
