  • Here's this week's NPPE Q and A: Q: What are technical societies? Can your engineering or geoscience association be considered a technical society? A: Commonly organized around an engineering or geoscience discipline, technical societies publish research, codes and standards. They allow their members to develop professionally as well as provide networking opportunities. Joining a society is optional. Your association is a regulatory association that regulates engineering and/or geoscience in your province or territory. Its role is different, and it can't be considered a technical society. Here are three examples of technical societies: IEEE, ASHRAE and Atlantic Geoscience Society.

  • Here's this week's NPPE Q&A: Q: Someone who is a licensed engineer in the USA is working in Canada and using the title, Design Engineer. Would this be considered a misuse of title? A: Yes. Only licensed engineers working in that region have permission to use reserved names and titles. Protected names like engineer or geoscientist and the equivalent abbreviations, P.Eng. and P.Geo., may only be used by those with an active licence. (For more, please see slide V.1 in the video presentation or https://bit.ly/3OWrmG2 ).

    • November graduating class.
  • Here are some Q and A for the #NPPE: Q: What is the significance of having the right to use the title "P.Eng." or "P.Geo."? A: The significance of having the right to use the title "P.Eng." or "P.Geo." is that it allows individuals to call themselves a Professional Engineer or Professional Geoscientist according to the associations' terms, which signifies their qualifications and adherence to professional standards. Q: What are the three roles of provincial/territorial associations in Canada? A: The three roles of provincial/territorial associations include: awarding licenses, regulating and disciplining members, and setting practice standards, developing codes of conduct, and enforcing the use of title and engineering services from non-members.

  • Here are some of our interactions with our clients: #CBA Q: Does PEO require that the validator be of the same discipline as the applicant? Have you encountered a similar situation from your experience and the engineers you helped? A: PEO will look at this on a case-by-case basis, but we don't have any stats on the success ratio of clients who have submitted with validators in a different discipline. If you have a mechanical engineer colleague, you might consider using them instead. #CBA Q: Do I need to mention the name of the company that I write a competency based on the experience that I had there? A: The company name is not essential to your competency example. So, it doesn't have to be included in the case where you're trying to keep it confidential or if it's not relevant to the example. If you're worried about confidentiality concerns, please see section 3.2 in PEO's CBA Guide, https://buff.ly/3P9fSzO .
