We're proud to announce the publication of the 3rd Issue of the: Journal of Preparedness in Canada This issue includes our research division's initial findings from our recent survey on the relationship between preparedness and social capital, with an interesting reflection on the value of preparedness to the arts and entertainment community. Preparedness itself lives in a synoptic world, with a plethora of academics, researchers, practitioners and experts offering their informed and / or experienced opinion on what falls within the definition of preparedness. Heterogeneity reigns, which provides the purveyor of the information much latitude in their delivery and frame. Thus, we have a wildly diverging set of standards for the prepared individual. We often test our clientele and students with a simple question: If you were to describe the ideal avatar, the symbolic prepared individual, if that person was before us, how would you describe them? This is where we at Preparedness Labs Incorporated deviate from the norm, we frame preparedness as these three elements: Attitude, Personal Responsibility and Strategic Thinking So if preparedness is a structure of those three elements as we understand them, then the overall concept is simple. Preparedness is correlated with outcomes. Research into the variables that contribute to better post event outcomes homogeneously supports the value of social capital. Stored social capital within an individual or collective permits the flow of other capitals, either human, financial or physical, whether in periods of calm or in crisis. Equipment or knowledge is not transferred unless there is a familiarity, a relationship, based on a degree of trust and norms of reciprocity. Individuals are hesitant to loan an item to a stranger at the door, but the family across the street with whom they are acquainted, has a higher likelihood of a successful loan. This principal extends to knowledge transfer, the creating and dissemination of risk communications, be that preparedness communications in advance of an event, or crisis communications during and post event. There are negative and positive aspects of social capital, as well as secondary and tertiary gains from the fostering and maintaining relationships with close family or friends, with community or service organizations and across power barriers with governance agencies. As we approach Preparedness Week, consider the state of your social capital, internal within your organizations and with the served community.
