The new PDX Airport terminal is officially open! With 95% of the roof’s steel sourced within 25 miles and wood from within 300 miles, this project was made a reality through local partnerships. The impressive 9-acre roof features a wood-and-glass design that fills the terminal with natural light. RDH is proud to have contributed to the glazed components of the enclosure. Our custom 30-ft curtain wall accommodates seismic movements up to 24 inches, providing safety and sustainability for years to come. Situated on the Oregon Coast, Prow House is a 5,000 sf private residence features an expansive glass façade arched over a rugged cliff, built with both sustainable and durable materials to withstand the marine environment. The design makes smart use of minimal space, with the garage on the top level of the home. As building enclosure consultants, our Seattle and Portland teams performed design assist and construction field review for the project. Our scope covered extensive waterproofing of the below-grade retaining wall that runs the length of the home. At the end of August, I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Whitehorse, Yukon (Northern Canada), for a pilot project with the Government of Yukon. The study evaluates various Cold Climate Heat Pump technologies to determine their effectiveness for heating and cooling of residential homes in the sub-arctic. Our team at RDH Building Science is handling the sensor monitoring and data analysis. A bit about Whitehorse—over the past decade (2013-2023), its population has surged by an impressive 26% (source: Yukon Bureau of Statistics), making it the largest community in the Yukon. It was a major hub during the Klondike Gold Rush, and it sits within the shared traditional territories of the Ta'an Kwäch'än Council and the Kwanlin Dün First Nation. The North faces unique climate challenges, and the Government of Yukon and its residents are committed to decarbonizing their buildings and adapting to the changing environment. The natural beauty of the area is breathtaking, and everyone I met was incredibly friendly! Here are some of my favourite photos from the trip!

The University of Victoria Student Housing and Dining Complex offers 783 beds of affordable, on-campus housing while supporting the university’s goal of net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. As the enclosure and Passive House Consultant, our team worked to achieve optimal building performance through early design decisions, including a large commercial kitchen. The all-electric system uses heat recovery to minimize energy consumption, and rigorous quality assurance ensured airtightness exceeded targets. This award-winning project is LEED Gold and Passive House Institute , contributing greatly to the University’s carbon footprint reduction. The updated guide, originally published in 2017, continues to support excellence in nail-laminated timber (NLT) design and construction across Canada.
