‘Calling out’ is the act of stopping oppressive behaviour like a racist or sexist comment immediately. ‘Calling in’ is the act of exploring a behaviour or language that is more nuanced and unclear if it is oppressive. Learning to deploy both skills in our work internally and with our donors and volunteers is essential. Earlier this week I attended The Partnership Conference. Attending coincided with my maiden voyage along Bloor Street commuting on my bike - a big personal accomplishment. It felt great to attend a conference where key themes included #ESG, the #environment and #sustainability and knowing I had taken a low impact transportation method to get to the conference. I appreciated hearing more about #GreenHushing - essentially the opposite of #GreenWashing (see diagram picture below) and of course reconnecting with colleagues across the sector including my fellow Findhelp | 211 Board Directors - Michael Anhorn, Julie Sommerfreund (she/her) plus Sharif Mahdy, Nicole Danesi, Heather Nelson, MBA, CFRE, and Andrea Hébert. #socialimpact #purpose #canada #partnerships #ESG #CSR #sustainability

Perspective is so important and sometimes we need to get to a new vantage point in order to shift our point of view. I recently had a chance to really change my vantage point with some time spent in the Rockies. For many organizations, stories are a form of currency. This is particularly true in the nonprofit and social impact sectors. We use stories to raise awareness, to inspire action, and to generate the funds needed to accomplish our goals. Once the work is done, we share stories to show donors, volunteers, and supporters the impact of their contributions. Stories are how we engage and invite others to be part of the change. Stories matter. So why do we keep telling the stories of those we serve in a one-dimensional way? What’s the harm in centering tragedy in our donor appeals? We know that emotive stories help people connect with our cause, but at what cost? Direct and mass marketing is one of the more stable and tested ways of raising funds for organizations but are we evolving this approach fast enough? So proud of the work we do. Our philanthropy team consistently digs in to fundraising beyond “how do we engage audiences to give” to “how can we shift power and educate diverse audiences whilst engaging to give”. It is thanks to leaders such as Huda Al-Saedy and Marlie Whittle that we’re empowered and supported to do all of our work with justice, equity, diversity, accessibility, inclusivity & reconciliation at the forefront. Very grateful to be part of a team that leads with our values.

I'm so proud to work for an organization that has such high and clear standards for ethical fundraising. Tying a charity's gift acceptance policy to its mission - and commitment to reconciliation - shouldn't be a radical idea.

New Case Study: Ecojustice Gift Acceptance and Fundraising Policy A big thank you to Marlie Whittle and Huda Al-Saedy for allowing me to share a case study on Ecojustice Canada's Gift Acceptance and Fundraising Policy as part of my research on Gift Acceptance Policies and Practices in Canada. Ecojustice Canada made a conscious choice to connect the Gift Acceptance Policy with their Fundraising Policy - understanding the practices are inextricably linked - in that fundraising leads to gifts and ensuring absolutely clarity and consistency on the fundraising practices that will lead to the types of gifts that they will indeed accept as an organization and limiting the number of gifts they are offered which they ultimately cannot accept. This policy makes clear their values and how those values impact their fundraising and gift acceptance. How might difficult conversations lead to more sustainable and productive relationships with donors? We often encourage conflict avoidance with our donors for fear of them being upset and taking their donation elsewhere. When we avoid difficult conversations and proper expectation setting we are being unfair to ourselves, our work and to the donors.
