STOP taking BIG breaths! Contrary to some common ideas around breathing, taking BIG breaths does not help you energise and get more oxygen to your tissues. By slowing down your breathing, driving the air into the lower belly, and exhaling as slowly as possible you're giving your body a chance to transfer more oxygen from the bloodstream to the tissues, thus improving your health. The only way we can really grow and transform in the way that brings us closer towars our true selves in my experience is by walking INTO our fear. There are some fundamentals of fear that I learned from an amazing book by Susan Jeffers called ""Feel the Fear and Do it Anyways."" These were absolute game changers for me in addition to working through fear using my body. In this book she outlines: 1) Fear is just a FEELING 2) Pushing through fear is less frightening than living with the underlying fear that comes froma feeling of helplessness. 3) Fear come from the underlying belief that you can't handle it. 4) The only way to alleviate fear is to go out and do it. 5) The only way to feel better about yourself is to do it. This is why I chose to move to Asia. Of course, I had an intuitive and deep call to go East. Something about the monks, Buddhism and yoga PULLED me there. I could not explain it but I had to trust it. I knew if I'd stayed in Canada it would have been because of fear. I turned down a very nice offer to do a Ph.D with a famous professor because I knew I had to follow my heart and let go of my fear. My journey in Asia has been very little of what I expected and EVERYTHING that I needed. I absolutely don't regret the decision and it has taught me to face myself in more ways than I can imagine. This has been profoundly librating and meaningful. To those who are on the fence about a big decision (or a small one) please read again the above points. I have taught stress and performance management for years and have used various tools to help with mindset changes and changing the stress response in the body. One of the things I found challenging, especially at the corporate level, was how much people really needed help but also how not every exercise worked for everyone. This was especially the case with mind-body techniques like meditation & mindfulness. I knew from my own experience with this modality how effective and efficient it was, but would this translate well to others? Would even the most stressed and resistant attendees feel the positive impacts? The answer I have found is a resounding YES!
