  • A team of respiratory scientists from across Canada have been awarded a $2 million lung health team grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research | Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada to study the role of mucus in asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and chronic cough. The CANMuc team believes that mucus is a significant contributor to clinical symptoms and severity of asthma, COPD, and chronic cough. Yet current strategies for diagnosing and treating these chronic respiratory diseases have focused primarily on assessing lung function and lung inflammation. “[We] have identified the lack of biomarkers and standardized tools as the main reasons why mucus blockages are not assessed adequately,” says Manali Mukherjee, Ph.D., who is leading the CANMuc team from the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health (FIRH), a joint McMaster UniversitySt. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton research institute in Hamilton, Ontario. The CANMuc team will collaborate over a five-year period to better understand how mucus accumulates in the airway and to develop clinical tests for mucus biomarkers aimed at improving treatment. • 🌟 Story of the Week - Conquering a chronic lung infection🌟 Lung problems plagued David Shoots since his youth. It would take buying a dream cottage as an adult for him to finally piece together the puzzle behind his poor health. David visited the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health (FIRH) at St. Joe's for testing. There, under the care of respirologist Dr. Gerard Cox, David was finally able to get the answers he needed. Check out the full story here: https://bit.ly/4czLB6G About the FIRH: For decades, the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health – a partnership between McMaster University / McMaster Faculty of Health Sciences and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton – has been a world leader in the treatment of lung diseases like #Asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (#COPD), and #PulmonaryFibrosis. The goal of the Institute is to conduct research that increases the understanding of respiratory health and disease though collaborative clinical studies that aim to enhance patient care at the Hospital. The Institute’s reputation as a leader in respiratory health is not only evident in the volume of high-quality, peer- reviewed studies it produces, but also by putting into practice new and innovative treatments that enhance the care of the patients St. Joe’s serves. #WeAreStJoes #TheFirestone #HamOnt

  • 🌟 Exciting News🌟 We’re thrilled to announce the kickoff of a new pilot program at St. Joseph's Villa & Foundation called The Happiness Programme, by Social-Ability. This is the first-of-its-kind activity that blends interactive, sensory light technology with a structured and guided program of training and support. Thanks to a grant from the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation's Discovery and Adopt Program, The Research Institute of St. Joe’s Hamilton is supporting this one-year pilot, which launched during the Villa's Seniors Month ribbon cutting event on June 20. The event was attended by more than 40 staff, including many recreation therapists, Foundation members, and residents who had an opportunity to interact with the technology. Through this pilot program, we aim to: ✅ Increase physical participation and resident engagement by 20% from baseline. ✅Boost resident social interactions by 20% from baseline. ✅Improve family and staff satisfaction with resident engagement through the program. The program will be seamlessly integrated into daily and weekly recreational schedules, with a special focus on one-on-one sessions in various settings. We expect significant improvements in physical, social, and cognitive well-being, combating apathy. Staff evaluation surveys will also be conducted after 2-3 months to gather feedback and assess the program’s impact. We’ll also capture patient and family voices through interviews. A huge shoutout to Deborah Fernandes (Clinical Lead), Niloofar Heidarinejad BSc, MLT, MHA (Project Coordinator, Innovation & Partnerships), Mackensey Bacon (Manager, Innovation & Partnerships), Zayn Moosa (Innovation & Partnerships Intern) and the incredible team at St. Joseph's Villa Dundas and Social-Ability for making this a successful event. Social-Ability aims to provide safe, meaningful, and engaging activities for those living with cognitive and physical care needs. It also equips staff with a tool to care in a creative, engaging way that allows residents to access hundreds of programs.
