Good day!! It’s the May Long Weekend! Yay! An extra day of weekend living. An extra day to enjoy the weather of Canada’s transition from Spring to the next season which should be summer. Now, because it’s a Long Weekend, most folks like to enjoy themselves outside in sunshine. Clear sunny days are typically viewed as the optimal weather for the three days that compose a Long Weekend. However, getting sunshine all those days is not a guarantee at all. In fact, there are greater odds that there will be rain during a Long Weekend versus a standard weekend. Over the course of a Long Weekend, there is a 14.3% increase in the chance that there will be rain or some other crappy kind of weather. That explains why it seems that there are few really nice Long Weekends as that is a material risk increase. You may be asking yourself, ‘How can he know that? Has he gone over all the historic weather data?” Well, you are right for asking but it was a rather simple task; one that only involved a calculator and some basic math. The source of this data comes from the use of statistics and the power of percentages. So, in order not to get lost in an overly data heavy explanation yet, I don’t want to make it sound too simple (I’m not that smart) but here is the answer. With one more day added onto a weekend making it a Long Weekend, there is one more day of potential for bad weather. Therefore, a Long Weekend has precisely a 1/7th more likelihood (aka 14.3%) to encounter bad weather. There you have it. The power of statistics at work in our daily and Long Weekend lives. Good day!! It is a special day today. It is one which recognizes we all came from mothers, and we may also have mothers who are more motherly than our biological ones. While we may know or not know our mother, we may see them or not, they may be or may not be alive, we may love them or not, we may wish to remember life with them or not have any memories or those we wish to recall; regardless of our own personal circumstances, there were moms involved who ensured that we had the opportunity to be here today – be they our grandmothers or multiple ‘greats’ in front of grandmother. It is because of them that we are here today. That is why we should take the time to recall the efforts and risks involved in their having a child; take the time to recall those that have taken us in as their child and in turn be thankful that we are here. Yup, that went a little deeper than I was planning but that’s what happens when I get on a roll with typing. I tend to start and just continue. Alright, now that I have readjusted in my chair and cleared my throat, let me begin with the business side of this email. This week’s set of articles addresses the ongoing ESG conflict of doing business while supporting transition where banks are the middle players trying to meet opposing sides’ requests. The second article gives Canada a cheer for the increased ability of being capable of getting more of our resources to non-US markets. Lastly, the third article again discusses a bank facing challenges from shareholders, it is Barclays’ Board Chair who sums up the challenge his bank faces in only a few words. That’s it for this week. Good day!! We are in a new month. The Month of May has arrived with limited fanfare – at least in my life. Perhaps you’ve been able to enjoy the start of this month. For this week’s articles, the first discusses how the demand for natural gas has led to increases being moved through TC Energy’s pipelines; secondly, profits for oil firms have allowed for lowered debt needs; and thirdly, the long awaited Indigenous loan guarantee program was launched this past week where the fund will be available for oil and gas projects. That’s it for this week. Good day!! It is a busy time these days. Many obligations for those who support a sports team. For those who do not follow sports, the time is now for fans of hockey and basketball to enjoy post-season games with lots of series to occupy their attention. Yes, it is also baseball season but what’s the point of watching the first half of a 162 game season – why not wait until August to see which teams are worth watching and in particular if ‘your’ team has a chance. Maybe that’s just me though. In the meantime, I know I’ll be enjoying the playoff seasons of hockey and basketball until the weather gives enough justification to get outside or my favourite team is eliminated. When your team isn’t playing or those fans in your life are busy watching ‘the game’, here are some articles for your reading leisure. For this week, the first article considers how new amenities in their commercial buildings may attract tenants. The second article shares the outlook for the price of crude oil this year and into 2025. The final article discusses the year-round nature of forest fires and the shutting in oil and gas production. That’s it for this week. Good day!! We are entering the middle of April. The month itself is usually full of happenings such as Easter and perhaps some left over time from Spring Break (for those involved in some level of schooling). However, as the month continues, one realizes this is a greyish time. Not necessarily a boring time of year but more of a bleakish point where it is officially Spring yet, the reminders of Winter still remain. There is the road gravel, placed to keep one on the road but has since slowly moved over; the gravel now occupies curb lanes and medians confirmed by the rising dust and ‘thunk’ of a rock on the windshield generated by that vehicle in front of you. Then over at the shopping malls and other large surface parking locations, you encounter the retained mountains of black ice, melting but likely to remain in some form until early May with the occasional dusting to give the piles an appearance respectability albeit only temporarily. That is what I’ve come to see for this month. My efforts will be to see the grey and brown as the harbingers of the wonderful times to come in the next several weeks. Or just not look at the ground but enjoy the sunshine when out by only looking up. That’s my plan to overcome any of the greyish feeling of April. In a different way of avoiding the grey, there are several articles curated for your reading and learning. This week’s articles include a discussion of how the US oil production is expected to decline in the near-term; how Canada is different than the US (not just about removing one’s shoes at the door); and, what the focus is for Canadian oil companies. That’s it for this week. Good day!! I’m ensuring this is posted before Monday so that you are able to read it; there being a full solar eclipse occurring tomorrow I worry those “Solar Light Lenses” people ordered may not in fact work. Well, either way enjoy the display (if you can) but careful with your eyes. Onto the purpose of this email, sharing some information. The initial article delves us back 150 years ago to the area that is known as Winnipeg. Some great photo comparisons for you to gander and ponder upon. The next article discusses the oil price tightening which is being push by Saudi Arabia's market influence. Lastly, the LNG project supported by Haisla Nation and Pembina Pipelines Corp. has moved a step forward. That’s it for this week. Good day!! Welcome (back) to the Weekly(ish) Reading Week email! I seem to have missed a couple, ok, maybe three weeks – that time change was a real bugger on my ability to put out regular emails! I guess it was just the “(ish)” part of the weekly(ish) pushing for recognition. This week’s articles discuss the ‘almost’ completion of Trans Mountain’s expansion. Sometime later this month of April, the final section will be completed. As the completion approaches, the pricing for Western Canadian Select (WCS) is expected to gain on West Texas Intermediate (WTI) giving Canadian producers a bigger return on their crude production. To further help, OPEC+ has signalled that it will continue to maintain its production cuts which is seen to keep oil pricing higher. The last article is one that stood out to me for the rarity of such an occurrence – the CEO for Canadian Tire did not get given a bonus for this past year. What? That’s normal right? That’s it for this week.
