Improving the health of Albertans by building passionate community support for the Royal Alexandra Hospital.
About us
We are the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation, dedicated to creating passionate community support for the Royal Alexandra Hospital and it's centres of excellence - the Lois Hole Hospital for Women, CK Hui Heart Centre, and the Eye Institute of Alberta. The Royal Alex is many things to many people, but first and foremost, it’s a place where hope and healing carry on 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We’re pleased to share some snapshots of the diverse activity – surgery, therapy, research, meetings, and more – that is made possible by strong community support. We hope that our donors and supporters will appreciate how much the Royal Alex offers to the 300,000 patients a year who seek treatment here and how your support plays an important role in building better patient care at our hospital.

Thank you, Athabasca University, for sharing my story so beautifully. One never truly knows where life will take them, but I am so grateful for the path I’ve traveled. Over the past 20 years, through the Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation, the Alberta Women's Health Foundation, and the Women's Health Collective Canada / Association canadienne pour l’équité en santé des femmes', I’ve had the privilege of working alongside passionate advocates who share a deep commitment to improving healthcare. Together, we’ve advanced healthcare through new technology and treatment protocols, which have improved patient outcomes. Real change happens when passionate people unite. I’ve witnessed firsthand the power of advocacy, philanthropy, and research to rewrite the future of healthcare. When you can be part of a movement that changes the trajectory of health outcomes for not just hundreds, but millions of people, that’s both humbling and deeply inspiring. And yet, 20 years later, I find myself still asking: What’s next? How do we push further? What more can we do? Because there is always more to do—more barriers to break, facilities to modernize, lives to improve, and voices to elevate. To every researcher, healthcare provider, donor, and advocate who has joined in this journey: thank you. Your dedication fuels progress and your vision for a better future inspires me every day. To those in government, recognize that the larger community wants to see progress beyond org charts—hospitals like the Royal Alex need significant investment if we are to meet modern standards of acute care. This work is Herculean — but I know we can get there together.
"There's a big, heavy lift that needs to happen in women's health research, but we're well on our way to getting more hands around the table." Health champion. Leader. Storyteller. Athabasca University Faculty of Business MBA grad. Sharlene Rutherford, MBA continues to soar to new heights for health care, and women's health in particular. #AthabascaU #HealthCare #Research Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation

Each year, more than 26,000 individuals experiencing homelessness seek care in Alberta’s Emergency Rooms—many of whom are discharged back to the streets. Without stable housing, recovery is nearly impossible, and many patients return to the ER days later, caught in a cycle that jeopardizes their health and well-being. This cycle has devastating consequences—for patients, who face dire health outcomes and a loss of dignity; for healthcare providers, who experience moral distress when discharging patients with nowhere to go; and for the healthcare system itself, which bears immense strain. Nowhere is this challenge more evident than at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, which sees the highest number of at-risk patients in its Emergency Department. That is why I am deeply grateful to the Honorable Jason Nixon, ECA, MLA, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services, and Premier Danielle Smith for their commitment to breaking this cycle. Their announcement of $1.8 million in operational funding for the Bridge Healing Transitional Accommodation program ensures that this life-saving program will continue. This funding will provide essential support to individuals leaving hospital care who still require care and whom would otherwise face homelessness, offering them a safe place to heal and the resources needed to transition successfully into stable housing. By addressing this critical gap, the Bridge Healing program not only improves health outcomes but also reduces strain on emergency services, fostering a more compassionate and effective system of care. Bridge Healing is more than a place to stay—it is a chance for care to transition outside of the hospital in a place that also offers a new beginning. The Royal Alexandra Hospital Foundation stands shoulder to shoulder with community partners, including the Government of Alberta, to support this vital work because this is, truly, the human way forward. We look forward to building upon this support through our continued work with donors across the public, private and not-for-profit sector. Please join us: https://lnkd.in/eGDUp_Qn

It's #WorldGlacuomaWeek!! Glaucoma is an eye disease. More specifically, it is a disease that affects the optic nerve initially, causing a loss of peripheral vision in patients. If not detected early on and adequately treated, it may progress towards a more severe vision loss and affect central vision. Join us this week in raising awareness, spreading knowledge, and prioritizing eye care. Let us come together to shed light on the importance of regular eye check-ups, early detection, and proactive measures against glaucoma.
