We are immensely proud of our volunteers, who balance their professional lives with their commitment to saving lives on the water. Their diverse skills and unwavering dedication make all the difference. Last Friday evening, RCMSAR 5 Crescent Beach responded to reports of someone in the water off Kwomais Point calling for help. When our crew arrived on scene, they found a capsized vessel but didn't know the whereabouts of the person in distress. As our crew prepared to conduct a search, they received a radio call from the Coast Guard informing them that another boater had picked up the individual. With the person confirmed safe, our team focused on re-righting the boat, using a dewatering pump to remove the water, and towed the vessel back to Crescent Beach Marina. In the early hours yesterday morning, the incredible volunteers at our Gibsons station responded to a Mayday call for a sinking vessel with one person on board. Despite the challenging circumstances, these unpaid professionals showcased their unwavering dedication and expertise, working seamlessly with the Nanaimo RCMSAR station and the Coast Guard to ensure a safe and happy ending. (photo credit Morgan Beall) Their commitment and teamwork exemplify the true spirit of volunteerism, proving once again that our community is in safe hands thanks to these dedicated volunteers. 🌊🚤👏 If you're looking for a challenging and rewarding volunteer experience, look no further! rcmsar.com/get-involved/ #VolunteerHeroes #RescueAtSea #UnpaidProfessionals #Teamwork #RCMSAR

We are proud to share that Alex Muir, one of our long-time volunteers, was selected as a recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal. The Coronation Medal, created to mark the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, recognizes those who have made significant contributions to Canada and their home province. Alex was recognized for his 40 years of service to RCMSAR making him one of our longest serving volunteers. Alex was instrumental in developing the Oak Bay and Victoria marine rescue stations and was involved in many rescues over the years, saving numerous lives. He has taken on almost every role within the station, including Station Leader, President of the Oak Bay Sea Rescue Society, and he was an active coxswain for over 33 years. Alex has personally trained many rescue volunteers and his fundraising efforts were instrumental in the purchase of all the rescue vessels for Oak Bay. The Honourable Janet Austin, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia, pictured below, presented Alex with his award at a ceremony at Government House in Victoria last week. Congratulations Alex!

Today is National Wine and Cheese Day. And, since this is also National Drowning Prevention Week, we remind you to save the wine and cheese until after you're safely back on shore! Drinking and water sports of any kind don't mix. Ever! (Cheese and water sports is fine though!) #BoatSober
