Continuous improvement is more than just a goal at #Samuel – it's a mindset. This is especially true for Christopher Hepburn, Operations Manager at our Associated Tube Group (ATG) in Birmingham, AL, who has made it a key focus at the facility, with team members embracing the philosophy enthusiastically. "We aim to have one kaizen per month, but usually have two or three because team engagement is so high," Chris shares, using the Lean Six Sigma term that refers to gathering people to problem solve, brainstorm improvements and assign tasks and timelines. Here, he shares five tactics that have helped generate this positive response: Maintain momentum: When one big change happens, create more. Involve the team: If the team isn’t involved, the change won’t stick. Including them in the design process leads to better experiences and outcomes. Adopt an agile mindset: If you find something that works well, you can always improve on it. And if something doesn’t work well, scrap it and move on. Testing: If we are changing a process or systemic operation, we try it in one cell first before implementing it across the entire shop. Somebody always gives input that improves the process. Start with onboarding: Every new hire gets an overview of our Lean 6 Sigma culture. It's part of their employee experience, right from day one. As we don cozy sweaters and bid farewell to hot summer days, we are taking a few moments to relive some of the activities that took place at our facilities over the past few months, including: As part of our focus on #HealthandSafety, we invited representatives from Bellin Heath and the local police department to visit our Samuel Pressure Vessel Group facility in Marinette, WI and share expert safety tips. Our four sites in Mexico also spent time talking about safety with a series of activities focused on physical and mental health. Our Associated Tube Group in Saltillo celebrated our commitment to #growthandevelopment by recognizing the academic achievements of team members and their children through our Samuel Stars contest, which saw winners take home goodie bags, board games and gift vouchers. Team building events took place at our locations around the #GTA, including a day at Canada's Wonderland and a Toronto Blue Jays game. Lastly, our annual golf tournament at the Carlisle Golf & Country Club was attended by 127 team members and supported our commitment to giving back to our communities by raising funds for Autism Ontario. We encourage our team members to take the reins on their careers by providing them with the tools and guidance they need to succeed. Cory Hooper, MBA, Manager, Corporate Strategy, is a great example of someone who has embraced this empowerment. Since joining Samuel in 2021, Cory has progressed through three roles by taking on increasing responsibility, mastering the art of clear communication and putting his hand up for new opportunities. "I've learned not to be afraid to take on more responsibility, even if I think I'm not ready," shares Cory. "My managers aren't going to put me into a situation that I'm not ready for." Being able to grow and try new things is one of the things Cory enjoys most about working at Samuel: "When our leaders say they want to develop and promote internally, those aren't just words – I have seen it happen, and my own career growth is substantive proof." So, what advice would Cory give to people looking to follow in his footsteps? "Take charge of your career. Be clear about your goals and start the conversation with your leaders." At #Samuel, our team members are our most important asset, and we love celebrating service milestones – especially when it's an impressive 50 years, like with Ron Morris, who has been a pillar at our Baltimore Service Center in Massachusetts for five decades. He joined Samuel in the early 1990s, starting out in the shop cutting metal. Over the course of his impressive career, he has acquired extensive industry knowledge, ultimately transitioning into his current Program Manager role. “I’m happy to represent the company, and very proud to say I work for Samuel,” says Ron, whose steadfast consistency over the years has been a true asset to the business. "Ron does so much for us," says George Dowell, the facility's general manager. "His wealth of knowledge has helped us keep one of our key customers for more than 35 years." Despite his long tenure, Ron says he’s not thinking of retirement anytime soon: "I'll keep coming in as long as they’ll let me." Interested in joining the Samuel team? We are strong proponents of the power of ideas – big and small, especially when it comes to Continuous Improvement. Adam Gross, Fabricator at Samuel Pressure Vessel Group (PVG) facility in Lebanon, VA, had a small idea, but it made a big difference. Adam learned that the cleaning agents in our parts cleaner still had life in them, despite being changed during frequent service appointments, so he suggested replacing them less often – every 12 weeks instead of every six. He submitted this to our ideas program, Samuel Solutions, which gives team members across the business the opportunity to share their suggestions for improvement and be rewarded with cash prizes. This program is also a great way for us to share best practices across the company, and we are currently looking for ways to implement Adam's idea – which only required a small change, but reduced costs, saved time and increased efficiency – at some of our other facilities. We’re thrilled to share that we’ve partnered with IMMSA to open a new plant in Monclova, Coahuila Mexico. This 125,000-square-foot facility, which will be focused on meeting the growing demand for railcar manufacturing in Mexico, will create 130 new jobs and allow us to collaborate more closely with our customers. The grand opening and ribbon cutting, which took place earlier this week, was attended by several members of the Samuel team, including President & CEO, Colin Osborne, VP & General Manager of Samuel’s Roll Form Group, Pat Coward and General Manager of Sales, New Business Development, Roger O'Toole and Engineering Manager, Adam Waldo. More than 200 people joined the Samuel team, including the Governor of Coahuila, Manolo Jimenez, the Mayor of Monclova, Mario Dávila Delgado and IMMSA founders Axel Munch and Sergio Perez, to celebrate this exciting milestone. We have already begun producing parts at our new location and look forward to sending out our first shipment next month. #CustomerService #InvestingtoDifferentiate #BusinessExpansion #Railcars
