This week, I started a project with an iconic hotel in Quebec to help them develop and execute sustainability initiatives. Like the other hotels I’ve worked with, this one is remote with challenges around retaining staff, supplier diversity, and balancing operational efficiency with doing what’s right for the environment. Nonetheless, I am hopeful that we’ll make some positive changes! Savvy Sustainability Inc.

It turns out that Montreal's built environment is the biggest contributor to the city's material and carbon footprints and needs to be a key focus to reduce environmental impacts. Some practical interventions mentioned in the report are: • Increasing the reuse of building materials (e.g., steel, concrete and timber) and components (e.g., doors and window frames), reducing the need for new materials • Increasing occupancy rates of residential and non-residential buildings, cutting the total number of new buildings needed • Deep retrofitting practices to improve energy efficiency, sustainability, and overall performance like HVAC system upgrades, water efficiency measures, or renewable energy integration (using secondary and non-toxic materials as much as possible) • Scaling resource-efficient construction practices like using bio-based construction materials (reducing embodied carbon), and adopting circular design principles like modularisation and multi-purpose building (extending the lifetime of buildings) I see a need for collaborating with property owners, providing incentives, and creating enabling policy to advance these initiatives. #builtenvironment #circulareconomy #circulardesign Circle Economy Ville de Montréal

Here are some key challenges organizations face when embedding sustainability, along with solutions to tackle them head-on: 🔄 Cultural Shift: Employees may resist shifting away from traditional practices. Solution? Engage stakeholders in decision-making & strategy development, and regularly communicate the vision and actions being taken. Transparency is key here. 💰 Resource Allocation: Sustainability initiatives may require financial investment and resources. Developing a business case that considers qualitative factors like reputation & regulations can help! Also look for available funding provided by government or organizations. 📊 Measuring Impact: It's crucial to accurately measure & report on initiatives. Solution? Establish robust metrics & frameworks for data collection and reporting, and regularly review the data for accuracy. 🤝 Cross-Departmental Coordination: Collaboration across departments is vital but challenging, especially in larger organizations. Solution? Form a sustainability committee with diverse representation.
