SHN was happy to have CityNews at the Breast Health and Awareness Seminar this past Saturday, highlighting the Ontario Breast Screening Program's recent expansion and its vitality to the Black community. Dr. Mojola Omole, SHN breast surgical oncologist and president of the Black Physicians’ of Ontario Association, emphasized the importance of awareness and advocacy within the community. “Even though Black individuals don't get breast cancer more often than our white counterparts, we do die from it more,” Dr. Omole told CityNews. “Part of this event is to empower our community to be aware of cancer, aware of what is normal and abnormal, and aware of modifiable risk factors.” Check out the segment: https://lnkd.in/guvZA-wE

#MedicalEducation has been in full swing at SHN over the past few months! We’ve had the opportunity to host some fantastic events, starting with our Teaching & Learning Centre (TLC) event, where our faculty gained valuable insights into innovative teaching methods and tools, contributing to their growth as educators at SHN. In addition, our Family Medicine Open House brought together new and experienced preceptors, building connections and a shared vision for the future. Our post-graduate year 2 residents took part in a Family Medicine Emergency Workshop, diving into hands-on training to enhance their skills in emergency care. Each event represents a step forward in our journey to becoming Canada’s leading community teaching health network. Thank you to everyone involved for making these events such a success! Today, SHN is holding the second annual Breast Health and Awareness Seminar for Black Communities in partnership with The Olive Branch of Hope Cancer Support Services, Black Physicians' Association of Ontario, Black Health Alliance, Scarborough Centre for Healthy Communities (SCHC), Toronto Central Regional Cancer Program, and Central East Regional Cancer Program. It has been our pleasure to welcome our community members for a day filled with meaningful discussions, same-day mammograms, wellness activities, and efforts to destigmatize breast health awareness in racialized communities. We extend our gratitude to our expert panelists for leading crucial conversations about breast cancer awareness and screening within black communities, as well as to Andrea Hazell MPP, Scarborough - Guildwood for her impassioned remarks. Research indicates that black individuals are often diagnosed with breast cancer at more advanced stages and are less likely to undergo screening at the recommended age. By hosting events like these, we aim to raise awareness and reduce barriers to equitable health care. Thank you to our sponsors AstraZeneca, Hologic, Inc. and Gilead Oncology for helping make this day possible! As we near the close to this year's #breastcancerawarenessmonth, we'd like to remind you of two more opportunities to be a part of community events on the topic of breast cancer - October 27: Ms. Letna's annual Healing Hope Brunch, a beloved fundraising initiative that supports SHN’s Cancer Care Program and other health organizations. This year will feature live music performances. This event will be hosted by Marcia Brown, with keynote speaker Dr. Ulana Kuwan, SHN general surgeon. Purchase your ticket: https://lnkd.in/g_Tz7cEU October 28: Scarborough Ontario Health Team is hosting a virtual town hall to provide updates to the Ontario Breast Screening Program. Check out what Woburn Collegiate Institute students learned during their last Working Together for Better Health session for #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth🎗️ They toured SHN Centenary's Breast Clinic and Operating Room, getting a firsthand look at the various programs involved in the journey of care for breast cancer patients, including diagnostic imaging, surgery, and cancer care services. This experience gave students a better understanding of breast health and the importance of awareness. It was also a great opportunity for the future healthcare leaders of Scarborough to discover the possibilities at SHN 🩺
