Recent standardized test results showed that only 50% of all grade six students met the standard in math. With the struggles of the past few years causing learning gaps for students of all ages, these results aren't surprising. The numbers are similar in other grades, with only 54% of grade 9 students meeting the math standard, down from 75% in 2019. It’s been said that “there’s something beautiful about October - the ending and beginning of things.” There are fun holidays, great food, beautiful colours, and a chance to dust off your favourite sweater. At Scholars, we honour the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Today, we reflect on the legacy of residential schools and the lasting impact on Indigenous communities across Canada. Today is also known as “Orange Shirt Day,” when all are encouraged to wear orange in solidarity to raise awareness of the tragic legacy in residential schools and in support of giving voices to Indigenous peoples.
