Non-profit working to break down educational barriers faced by Indigenous youth and children in Treaty 3 ✏️📚🍎

About us

SchoolBOX is a grassroots nonprofit organization committed to supporting the right of every child to a basic education. It all began with a notebook and a pencil. While in a tiny village in Northern Nicaragua Tom; SchoolBOX President and Founder, gave a young girl a notebook and a pencil. Seeing this simple gift, her father was overjoyed and said to her, ‘now that you have a notebook and a pencil you can go to school this year.’ This simple statement profoundly impacted Tom and eventually led to the creation of SchoolBOX. SchoolBOX uses simple, cost effective initiatives to allow children to go to school. SchoolBOX currently helps over 18,000+ children get a primary education on an annual basis. Our current programs enable education by providing school supplies, constructing essential infrastructure, and creating libraries. We work collaboratively with the Ministry of Education in Nicaragua and communities, in order to create sustainable solutions.

More kids are heading back to #school in Ontario today and yet many First Nations kids in our own province don't have #equalaccess to basic tools to feel #safe and thrive at school. Kids are going back without #books (at all, or ones that don't reflect their families), a school #lunch, essential technology, are driving hours from home or even moving away as young teens because there simply are no schools in their communities. This is Ontario in 2021. Terri Meekis, Director of SchoolBOX North, is charting a new way forward and helping to make sure every kid in our province has equal access to a safe education. You can read about the next SchoolBOX North project in the September issue of the theHumm or visit www.schoolbox.ca/kizhiik to give! #firstnations #education #equality #WeLoveKids #Treaty3 #library #schoollunch #TRC #backtoschool #nonprofit
