Canadian genetics were warmly welcomed into an ever-increasing number of countries and never faced any competition to speak of. The Canadians got a jump on the Americans in taking advantage of the new industry’s export potential. Europeans who had always selected their dairy cattle as if they were dual-purpose realized that they had taken a dead end and there was no way they would succeed. They had been trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. They decided to replace their black-and-white Friesians with the North American black-and-white Holsteins. They imported some live cattle but mainly frozen semen.
