Is this the real Elon Musk? True or False. 🤔 Firstly, no that's not really Elon, it's a deepfake... It's convincing though, isn't it? This new trend is deeply disturbing and will only get worse. Just think of the scenarios where someone could trick you... What if your CEO calls you on Teams or Zoom and you can't tell it's not really them? What if your son/daughter calls you on FaceTime in distress asking for money but it's not really them? How about your broker or investment manager using a video call to "prove" themselves before you transfer a large portion of your savings to them? There are myriad other ways this can be abused, and almost certainly will be. If you're ever not sure about someone's identity, the best way is to call them on the phone using a known-good phone number, *not* a phone number they give you (which will of course go back to them). Put any questions you have in the comments, and stay vigilant! #Deepfakes #Livestream #CyberAwareness #FakeElon

Do you know anyone who's been scammed on Facebook or another social media platform?

"Why doesn't Facebook just take down scams?" I got asked this question recently while chatting about a deepfake scam making the rounds online with Justin Trudeau telling people to invest in a (fake) crypto exchange. It really got me thinking though, and here's what I've come up with… 1️⃣ Social media Ads that violate the platform's terms of use, which a scam most definitely would, should be easily detected and taken down. However, some experts believe platforms don't do this because simply they're making money off the ads, which is a form of perverse incentive. I.e., companies generally don't like to give up revenue sources. 2️⃣ For social media posts, containing deepfakes and other misinformation, detection gets a bit trickier due to the sheer volume of posts, but it is still not impossible. Unfortunately during the recent rounds of silicon valley tech layoffs, one of the areas cut was the human moderators that review posts. So there are simply less people looking at content being posted. Yes, AI can do some of this work, but humans are still generally better at evaluating and making final decisions. So what it really boils down to is the platforms *could* fix the problem (or at least slow it down, but don't really want to because it costs them money. And like they say, money talks and bull$#!t walks.💰 🗣️ 💩 👣 Do you agree? Have you seen scams online or know someone victimized? Let me know in the comments. #Scams #CyberAwareness #CryptoScams #Deepfakes Video Credit: FOX

New sophisticated scams can victimize almost anyone, but especially older folks... My mother, who is a senior senior but still living independently, recently had a problem with her stove. She had bought an extended warranty from the appliance store and called the toll-free phone number on the paperwork. The person answering asked some questions about the stove and then asked for a credit card before they could send someone out. Luckily she smelled something fishy and declined, because it didn't make sense to need a credit card for a pre-paid warranty. 💡 She called me and we looked up the company online and found their phone number had indeed changed. 💀 It appears that the scammers somehow got a hold of the old number and were pretending to be the legitimate warranty company. ☎️ Upon calling the real warranty company at the new number, they confirmed that the old number no longer belonged to them. 🤷 I'm frankly astounded they would let this happen because it's printed on all their paperwork. How would anyone know it was no longer correct? Makes me concerned about how many people have already been bilked out of their hard earned money. Grrr.. 🤬 👵 Please share this post with everyone, and have a conversation with anyone in your life who's older and/or vulnerable, to make sure they know about the various scams and to be vigilant. Older folks can be a bit too trusting with a friendly sounding person on the phone. This Australian TV program highlights exactly what we're all up against with the rise of super sophisticated AI driven scams and hacking. https://lnkd.in/gkrkahpv #Scams #CyberAwareness #Seniors #Cybertips

Got an aging parent or relative? Please read this... You meet a lot of nice friendly people while out hiking in the woods. A while back, I got chatting with an older lady that I'd guess to be in her 80s, as our trails had converged for a short distance. 🤯 One of the questions she asked really blew my mind... "How do I stop someone from remotely accessing my computer?" Uh-oh. Turns out she had "invested" in bitcoin through some person online, and they had remote access to both her laptop and her iPhone. 😡 Well, that made me super angry, because I absolutely HATE the scumbags that target and victimize vulnerable seniors. I think they're the lowest of the low, and should be strung up by... well, I digress. Anyway, she didn't want to tell her adult children, and also didn't want to go to the police, probably for fear of looking foolish or being put in a home or whatever. I was at least able to help her delete the remote control app from her iPhone, and then she said thanks and hiked off on her merry way. I really wish I knew what happened... Seniors are particularly vulnerable to scams because their generation is more trusting, usually not tech savvy, and, unfortunately, often lonely for someone friendly to just talk to, which sometimes ends up being a scammer. I have an aging parent, and it's always a worry that one day this kind of thing will happen to her, although thankfully nothing has yet (that I know of). If you have a vulnerable senior in your life, make sure to educated them about both phone scams and online scams. And make sure it's they can tell you if something happens, rather than hiding it due to fear. Ohhhhh, so that's how it works... 🤯 😜 "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." - Arthur C. Clarke He was definitely ahead of his time, because in today's fast-paced world, there are many advanced technologies we take for granted that do seem like "magic" - cloud computing and AI spring to mind. Just like the coffee machine and the ATM in the video (hilarious, no?), you only see the inputs and outputs. What goes on behind the scenes is hidden from view and a mystery. But advanced technologies like cloud and AI are not there just there to be admired, because they solve real world problems and improve efficiency and effectiveness, if used correctly. What advanced technologies do you rely on in your daily life that seem like magic? #FunnyFriday #ArthurCClarke #AdvancedTech

Construction in the Toronto area isn't showing any signs of slowing down

the Toronto region is building up, way up... Did you know that the greater Toronto area (GTA) has the most tower cranes active of any city in North America - 238 at last count in late 2023! Second place was Seattle with a paltry 45, followed by Los Angeles with just 30. To avoid the plague of urban sprawl, it's imperative that cities build denser housing for people close to work, shopping, work and recreation facilities. And with easy access to high quality public transit, which provides a viable alternative to car ownership. Mississauga is a great example of a city that's doing just this. They have to, because there is essentially no "greenfield" (unused land) left there. So the only way forward is in-fill development, densification of existing areas, and adding "garden suites" (accessory dwelling units). I'm no urban planner (I don't even play one on TV), but I can see with my own eyes that the traditional development patterns just cannot be continued. What do you think?
