Unleashing the power of place for local communities to thrive in the global economy.

About us

Established as a registered charity in 2004, Shorefast was created to build economic and cultural resilience on Fogo Island, Newfoundland – a region previously devastated by the decline of the cod fishery. With an enduring commitment to Fogo Island, Shorefast is expanding its work for greater reach by sharing new models of place-based economic development with other communities, big and small. Shorefast is a registered charity that operates a set of charitable programs and owns social businesses in service of the local community. Together, they represent a determined effort to think holistically about how to find a way of life that is equitable, dignified, sustainable – and joyful. Shorefast’s charitable programs comprise a set of initiatives that hold relevance to community economic development – making it possible for local communities to thrive in the global economy. Shorefast’s social businesses were established to help grow another leg on Fogo Island’s economy, create meaningful employment, generate earnings to be reinvested in the community. Our businesses build on the inherent assets and strengths of place, capitalizing on the skills, culture, and imagination unique to Fogo Island. There is no private gain — all profits are reinvested in the community through Shorefast’s charitable programs.

Reflecting on our inaugural Shore Time: Designed as a gathering for ideas and connections, Shore Time far exceeded our expectations. We explored our relationships with art, economy, ecology, and each other, embodying the spirit of collaboration that defines our work. As Indy Johar said, “our ability to collaborate is the core of human success.” The energy and ideas shared continue to circulate after participants have returned home. Thank you to our community and to all those who journeyed to Fogo Island — you’ve made a lasting impact beyond our shores. We can’t wait to gather for the next Shore Time! We're still thinking about the engaging conversations and ideas shared at this year's Economic Developers Association of Newfoundland and Labrador conference in Twillingate. On October 2 and 3, Shorefast's Operations Manager Colleen Best joined community and business leaders from across the province, including Fogo Island's very own Jennifer Charles of Seven Seasons Farms. We discussed transforming sustainable tourism through storytelling, embracing inclusive practices, harnessing the strength of diversity, fostering collaboration between communities, supporting green economic development, and so much more. We look forward to continuing these essential discussions around the future of sustainable travel in Newfoundland and Labrador.

At Shore Time, Zita Cobb had a provocative conversation with Indy Johar. Thank you for coming from your large island to our small island to explore radical visions for the future, Indy. “I think what you are creating is the space to discover a different way of being, new classes of business models which are rich in systems value, and a new class of investment which is rooted in regenerative value...you created a template for a new theory of accounting here...the beginning of a new possible future.” - Indy Johar Indy is co-founder of Dark Matter Labs and of the RIBA award-winning urban practice Architecture 00. He is founding director of Open Systems Lab, and seeded WikiHouse project and Open Desk. Indy is a non-executive Director of BLOXHUB, is on the advisory board for the Design Museum's Future Observatory, is on the committee for The London Festival of Architecture, and is a fellow of London Interdisciplinary School. Currently a professor at RMIT University, he has taught at various institutions from TU-Berlin; University College London, Princeton, Harvard, MIT and New School. Indy was awarded the London Design Medal for Innovation in 2022 and an MBE for Services to Architecture in 2023. Photo: Jeremy Harnum
