Meet some of the talented youth leaders at the SickKids Centre for Global Child Health (C-GCH), who have been applying digital tools and technologies in their summer research to help create a healthier and more sustainable future for children worldwide: 🔵 Joining us from Western University is Evelyn Cai, who is working with Dr. Daniel Roth on a scoping review of academic integrity in #globalhealth. The goal of this project is to assess how breaches in #academicintegrity have been addressed and studied in the field of global health. 🔵 To help strengthen climate-resilient health systems, Syed Islam from McMaster University is working with Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta on a project that aims to develop a training course for #healthprofessionals which focuses on the effects extreme heat has on people's health. 🔵 Michelle Wijesinghe joins the C-GCH from McMaster University and is working with Dr. Bhutta on an Exemplars in Global Health project focused on #womenshealth and well-being. 🔵 Alyssa Duhon from McMaster University is working with Dr. Bhutta on the project: A review of promoting resilience, preparedness, adaptation, and response in 4C complex emergencies. This review aims to understand what strategies exist to reduce the impact of #climatechange on #healthoutcomes in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). 🔵 Faiz Ramji from Western University is working with Dr. Helen Dimaras to test a new recruitment strategy for a study on patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). The project aims to attract a large, diverse group of patients with different eye conditions to help validate a new PROM. 🔵 Kabier Izzeldin is a Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto student working with Dr. Shaun Morris on the project: Estimating the effect of neonatal infections and biopsychosocial risk factors on neurodevelopmental outcomes at 12 months of life in Kwale County, Kenya. His work is helping to address the current gap in #research on how these issues impact short and long-term #braindevelopment in surviving #newborns in LMICs. Key medical equipment procured by the Shaw Centre for Paediatric Excellence (SCPE) has been delivered to all Barbados Ministry of Health and Wellness (MHW) polyclinics! This is a step toward fulfilling SCPE’s goal of investing in high-quality paediatric clinical environments in Barbados. Among the items procured were digital neonatal/infant scales, digital child/adolescent scales, vital sign and bedside cardiac monitors, paediatric emergency carts, treatment tables and measuring mats. Senior leaders from the MHW including Senator Dr. The Most Honourable Jerome Walcott, Minister of Health and Wellness and Senior Minister Coordinating Social and Environmental Policy attended the official equipment presentation ceremony at the Frederick "Freddie" Miller Polyclinic in St. George, Barbados. During his address, Minister Walcott noted that the equipment will help ensure that Barbados remains a top paediatric health care provider in the region. 📣 Breaking! The first-ever guidance for managing #sicklecelldisease across Africa is out! The World Health Organization Africa has released the WHO SICKLE Package of Interventions for Sickle Cell Disease Management to  help countries improve quality of care, broaden access to treatment and strengthen health outcomes. The guidance was developed in collaboration with academic, public and private sector partners including Novartis to strengthen efforts to tackle the growing toll of sickle cell disease (#SCD). About 80% of the 8 million people with SCD worldwide live in Africa, where there is a lack of facilities that can provide comprehensive services including research, training and clinical management. Dr. Isaac Odame of Global Sickle Cell Disease Network, an expert contributor to the guidance documents, Guidance Framework for Sickle Cell Disease Management and Harmonized Guide for Sickle Cell Disease Management in Africa, believes this a critical step towards the reduction in incidence, morbidity and mortality due to SCD in Africa.
