About us
The United Way BC Social Purpose Institute (SPI) exists to grow business for good, partnering with companies and collaborating with governments, allied organizations, and others to grow the Social Purpose Business movement. We achieve this in several ways. We help businesses define and implement their social purpose to drive both business growth and societal good. We champion a purpose-led economy, accelerating the new business ethic to create long-term well-being for all. We are thought leaders, creating and curating insights and knowledge to define the transition pathway to the purpose-led economy. We convene the social purpose ecosystem – the partners and actors needed to bring social purpose to life in communities across Canada. Together, we build a better world through business. Businesses everywhere are redefining their role in society to foster business and societal success. A social purpose business is an engine for good, creating social benefits through everything it does. The SPI can help your business become one. Knowing and acknowledging the experiences of our collective past and its ongoing impacts on Indigenous Peoples is the first step towards healing and reconciliation. In support of and in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples and communities in British Columbia and Canada, United Way British Columbia released a Statement of Support for Truth Finding Work of the many First Nations in BC who are leading critical research on the sites of former Residential Schools. Read our Statement of Support for Truth Finding Work here: https://bit.ly/4ezcTdU Andrew Callicum, United Way BC Indigenous Priorities Director attended the 2024 United Way Centraide Canada National Conference and joined Roberta Jamieson, Canada’s first Indigenous woman to earn a law degree, first female Ombudsman in Ontario, and the first woman to be Chief of the Six Nations of the Grand River Territory, to share his insights on philanthropy from an Indigenous perspective. Watch the discussion here: https://bit.ly/40Ul3bh. Held in September in Langley, the 3rd Annual stɑl̓əw̓ Pow Wow brings awareness to Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities to share in healing together. Along with drumming, dancing, and art, an Orange Shirt Special honoured the Residential School Warriors showing they are not alone in healing from the impacts of residential schools. United Way BC has walked with and supported organizers since the pow wow’s inception with a #HiNeighbour Community Impact Grant. #NationalDayForTruthAndReconciliation #Reconciliation #IndigenousRights #EveryChildMatters #TRCDay #TruthandReconciliation #TRC #Indigenous #HiNeighbour

United Way BC exists to serve vulnerable people, and I can’t imagine a more motivating, stimulating, rewarding culture to work in. And that’s what I see and hear from our staff every day,” says Michael McKnight, United Way BC’s president and CEO. We are grateful, honoured, and #ProudToBeUnitedWayBC!
