Sefunmi and I had a great time sharing yesterday at the Waterloo Innovation Summit! 🎉 We chatted about experiential learning, the power of peer-led instruction, flipped classrooms... and what amazing things happen when folks build more confidence in themselves. 💖 Meeting other awesome folks building inclusive builder-oriented communities (shoutout Socratica) was also dope.

“Across sectors, whether you work in government, industry or academia, we need to rethink how we work,” said the University of Waterloo’s Chancellor Dominic Barton in his opening remarks at the Waterloo Innovation Summit on April 25. The theme of this year’s Summit examined transformations and elevated conversations between senior leaders and Gen Z talent entering the workforce. Panels and keynotes touched on leadership and workforce planning through increasingly uncertain economic, technological and societal challenges. More: https://lnkd.in/gARah5Cq | #UWaterlooNews

I’m still processing last night. Socratica Winter Symposium was the single greatest showcase of talent, creativity, and passion I have ever experienced. 700+ attendees, 30+ projects, and 10 presenters showcasing their work ranging from simplifying EV charging, creating a computer using a breadboard, innovative VR slideshow technology, and an organization dedicated to fostering human connection through pop-up events. And the best part? Entirely organized by University of Waterloo students. I learned about Socratica for the first time 4 months ago. A co-working space dedicated to encourage individuals to pursue their passion projects. A great idea, that hinges on one important factor - the people. And I can honestly say the people I have met at Socratica are some of the most interesting and kind ones I have ever met. Beyond just tech, it is a community of artists, filmmakers, photographers, and makers of all sorts. Thanks to their supportive community, here are some cool things that I worked on this term: - Built an AI-powered dating algorithm (which resulted in a relationship!) - Spontaneously decided to go on exchange to Australia next winter - Played guitar and sang in front of people for the first time ever - Built a tool to summarize YouTube videos and podcasts - Learned about RAG chatbots - Revived an old film review account on Instagram - Organized a Mario Kart tournament, with the music played by a live band If there is one main takeaway from the night: “Humans are at their best when they are making things.” Shoutout to all my fellow volunteers and thank you Socratica for welcoming me into your amazing community :)
