  • On Thursday, October 17, Premier Doug Ford, Minister of Health Sylvia Jones and Flamborough-Glanbrook MPP Donna Skelly visited St. Joe’s to learn firsthand about St. Joe’s robotic surgery program, which is the most expansive in the country.   The Premier, Minister of Health and MPP joined Mike Heenan, President, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, Dr. Bobby Shayegan, Chief, Department of Surgery and Dr. Anthony Adili, Chief Innovation Officer for a robotic surgery demonstration. As an international leader in this innovative field, St. Joe’s has multiple surgery platforms in the areas of urology, thoracics, head and neck, and orthopaedics with plans to expand to include gynecologic procedures.   St. Joe’s is grateful to the Ontario government for funding robotic surgeries for some kidney, uterine and prostate cancers – a decision that is helping reduce length of stay in hospital, allow for faster recovery times and higher patient satisfaction.   The Premier, Minister of Health and MPP also visited Dr. Anvari, Director of the Centre for Minimal Access Surgery (CMAS) at the Centre for Surgical Invention and Innovation‘s (CSii) simulation lab for a demonstration of world leading medical robotic technology. CSii and Insight Medbotics, along with partners MDA, St. Joe’s and McMaster University, have developed the world’s first autonomous image-guided robot for early detection and treatment of solid cancers such as breast and prostate. This groundbreaking achievement supports the establishment of a new medical robotic industry in Hamilton, Ontario, positioning the region as a leader in advanced healthcare technology.   St. Joe’s is proud to be a pioneer in robotic surgery and wants to thank our generous community of donors who have allowed our program to grow. To date, more than 4,500 patients have received robotic surgery at our hospital, and the data from those procedures has informed 12 published research studies.   Thank you to these leaders for taking the time to visit St. Joe’s and learn more about how patients across the region can benefit from robotic surgery.

  • A warm congratulations to our 2024 Spirit of Hope Award winners, who were recognized for their inspirational achievements at A Mental Health Morning yesterday. 🌅 This year’s recipients include: 🏆 Youth Category: Re-create Art Studio 🏆 RE-create Studio is an open, free art studio and outreach program for vulnerable Hamilton youth between the ages of 16 – 24. The studio is a safe and welcoming space that provides a community for youth facing barriers such as poverty, mental health issues, homelessness, low socioeconomic status, family conflict or whatever else life has put in their path. The youth-led activities and workshops allow those in attendance to self-express in a supportive environment, develop healthy relationships, and build community. 🏆 Group Category: Wayside House of Hamilton 🏆 Wayside House of Hamilton is a bedded addictions treatment facility that provides abstinence-based care to men living with substance use disorder in Ontario. Working tirelessly to reduce the severity of substance dependence through client-centered counseling and evidence-based therapeutic interventions, Wayside House has made concurrent disorders a central focus of their program as addiction is often intimately linked to depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. Wayside House’s holistic approach also extends care to the loved ones of participants, provides accessible educational materials, and offers a Supportive Housing program, resulting in over 85% of Wayside House graduates reporting an increased confidence in their ability to stay sober in the face of mental and physical pressures. 🏆 Individual Category: Sid Stacey 🏆 Sid is a suicide-loss survivor with the death of his teen daughter, Rachel, in 2007. To honour her memory, Sid established an annual city-wide awareness and fundraising event for suicide prevention called Running for Rachael. Sid Stacey is also well known for his leadership roles in our community, including his work in facilitating the development and launch of the citywide Hamilton Suicide Prevention Strategy in 2010, and chairing the Suicide Prevention Community Council of Hamilton since 2014. He also currently Chairs the Regional Suicide Prevention Committee. Additionally, he has been a key propeller of mental health education in our community over the years, coordinating the suicide prevention training efforts, leading the process to provide mental health awareness grants to schools, and developing educational tools such as ‘suicide is everyone’s responsibility’ cards that contain tips for identifying when someone may be considering suicide. Congratulations to this year’s winners and nominees and thank you to our generous sponsors Bell Let's Talk, HMECU, and LIUNA 💙 To learn more, visit: https://lnkd.in/gnHHtAFw

Hey, folks aged 18 or older! In honour of #WorldMentalHealthDay, we’re spotlighting Ontario Structured Psychotherapy West (OSP West ) – a program we’re proud to run in partnership with St. Joseph's Health Care London and Ontario Health | Santé Ontario. At OSP, you can learn to manage your #depression, #anxiety, worry, stress, post-traumatic stress, specific fears, and obsessive-compulsive concerns using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (#CBT) , a form of therapy where you learn to become more aware of the impact that your thoughts can have on your feelings and actions , and then learn practical skills to make changes to your thinking and actions so that you can live a better life. We work with our clients to decide on a format of #therapy that will work best for them – it could be working independently on CBT skills with regular support from a coach or therapist, attending online group therapy led by a therapist, or meeting with a therapist one-on-one, either online or in person. Find out more about OSP West and if it’s a good fit for you by visiting www.OSPWest.ca.

  • Thank you to everyone who joined us earlier today for A Mental Health Morning – presented by ArcelorMittal Dofasco. 🌅 ☕ With thanks to the support of our guests, sponsors and speakers, today’s event raised over $45,000 for mental health and addictions care at St. Joe’s. 💙 This year’s event featured best-selling author, DEI expert and psychiatrist-in-residence, Dr. Samra Zafar, M.D. who through a mix of personal experience and powerful storytelling, spoke on Mental Health Through the Lens of Intersectionality. Exploring themes of healing with trauma; the importance of self-compassion; the power of authenticity, acceptance and belonging; and the collective effort it requires to build and support resilience throughout her keynote, we are incredibly thankful to Samra for providing us with the opportunity to reflect and learn, and for inspiring us to continue breaking the stigma around mental health and addictions care. A special thank you goes to St. Joe’s Mental Health and Addictions team and our friends from Ontario Structured Psychotherapy who were on-site at the event to provide support and resources for those in need. As always, we are grateful to our event sponsors directworx, Manulife, FirstOntario Credit Union, The Effort Trust Company, & McMaster University Department Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences, as well as our corporate table sponsors! During Mental Illness Awareness Week, we are excited to announce a new donation of over $200,000 made by Sun Life and earmarked to support two research projects investigating novel treatments to support the mental health of women who have experienced trauma and are affected by hormonal sensitivity. These important projects will be led by Dr. Benicio Frey, Medical Director of the Women’s Health Concerns Clinic at St. Joe’s, and the Homewood Chair in Women’s Mental Health and Depression, along with his talented research associates. Data shows that women who’ve experienced trauma live with its after-effects like anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). At the same time, these women are also more likely to experience hormonal sensitivity which causes severe changes in their mood and mental health following normal hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual cycle. The challenge is that at present, these women are often only treated for their anxiety or their PTSD, but not their complex, co-presenting symptoms. As a regional lead for mental health and addictions care and a major birthing centre, St. Joe’s has a unique opportunity to explore the link between women’s reproductive milestones and their mental health and well-being. “The connection between trauma and hormonal sensitivity and their compounding effect on the mental health of women is currently under-researched, and that leaves room for gaps in care,” says Dr. Frey. “There is a vulnerable population of patients whom we hope to help through these projects, and we’re grateful to Sun Life for their support. With this boost in funding, we’ll not only test our new treatments and hypotheses, but widely share this new knowledge with others. So that, ultimately, we’re improving the care for women locally, nationally, and around the world.” 💛 To learn more about these exciting projects, read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/du_J9RN4

  • October 6-12 marks Mental Illness Awareness Week (#MIAW2024) in Canada, and we thought it was the perfect opportunity to recognize some of our generous donors that have supported youth mental health in our community through their generous gifts to St. Joe’s Youth Wellness Centre (YWC). 🤍 Joyce Family Foundation: Renewing Support for Youth Mental Health 🤍 Over the years, The Joyce Family Foundation has built a strong partnership with St. Joe's YWC. Most recently, gifts of $225,000 in 2021 and a new donation of $500,000 in 2024 from The Joyce Family Foundation have allowed the YWC to expand via The Joyce Link and build out its Transition Support Program so that youth in our community have access to personalized support to help guide them as they age out of the pediatric mental health system and enter the adult one. 👟 A Run for Chris: Raising Funds for Youth Mental Health & Addictions Care 👟 On August 18, 2024, over 400 participants, donors, and sponsors came together for the third edition of A Run for Chris. The 5k run/walk hosted in memory of Chris Owens, who passed away in 2021 after losing his battle with mental health and addiction, raised more than $41,300 in support of St. Joe’s YWC. 🧠 ArcelorMittal Dofasco: Mental Health Matters to Our Local Steel Giant 🧠 ArcelorMittal Dofasco (AMD) has long been a strong supporter of St. Joe’s and mental health, most recently donating $20,000 towards You Thrive, a program at St. Joe’s YWC committed to providing culturally safe mental health and substance use care to youth who identify as Black, Indigenous or People of Colour (BIPOC). (AMD is also the presenting sponsor of #AMentalHealthMorning they have been since its inception!) 💙 RBC: Connecting Youth & their Families to the Mental Health Care They Need💙 In 2020, RBC Foundation pledged an initial $300,000 to help fund St. Joe’s YWC’s Transition Support Stream, which serves young people transitioning from child and adolescent mental health services to the adult mental health system. This year, RBC Foundation renewed their commitment to St. Joe’s, increasing their pledged gift total to $400,000. This gift will continue to benefit the Transition Support Stream, while also supporting other mental health navigation services offered by the care teams at the YWC to connect youth to the care they need. To learn more about the amazing work the YWC is doing, visit reachouthamilton.ca. 🌐 Want to know more about these donations and their impact? Read the full stories in this year’s Donor Impact Report, arriving in your mailboxes and on our website soon 📪💌
