  • When Micheline Steele began experiencing life-altering chronic pain, she tried valiantly to piece together her own care – physiotherapy, mindfulness, medication and other remedies. Despite her efforts, there was little relief to the crippling pain. That all changed for Micheline when she was referred to St. Joseph’s Pain Management Program. Not only did the highly specialized team help her break the pain cycle, they also offered virtual care for many of her appointments – a life changing option for Micheline whose pain would have made the hour drive from home to St. Joseph’s a significant hardship. In fact, without virtual care, Micheline would have missed out on the full range of services crucial in pain management such as group therapy, where she found strength and connection with others going through a similar experience. “The combination of in person care when it’s needed and virtual care is complete care,” says Micheline. “There is so much that can be done without leaving your home.” Read Micheline’s story and learn more about virtual care at St. Joseph’s: https://bit.ly/3zqJEv8

  • At 25 years old, Elysa Spetgang has multiple thriving businesses and is just beginning a new post-secondary program. Four years ago, though, her life looked very different. Elysa was just 21, and after four months of declining health with no diagnosis in sight, tingling and numbness in her lower limbs ascended to her lungs and she went into respiratory failure requiring life support, a ventilator and a medically induced coma. It was only then that she was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and her road to recovery began. Elysa was transferred to Parkwood Institute’s neurological rehabilitation unit after five months in acute care and quickly found solace in recreational therapy. While it was lonely being so young in hospital, Elysa formed a bond with Breanne Carr, therapeutic recreation specialist, who helped her regain life through leisure. Between the garden, the kitchen and a pottery studio, recreational therapy joined with physical therapy and Elysa returned to doing the things she loves. • When Joan was preparing for her cataract surgery at St. Joseph’s, she was afraid her lack of a support-person would force her to cancel her appointment. With family in the United States and friends dealing with their own health issues, Joan had no one to accompany her to her appointment. In a last-ditch effort, Joan called Volunteer Services, and she was in luck – the appointment assistant program had just started! This novel program trains volunteers to accompany patients from the beginning of their appointment, providing logistical support. For Joan, her appointment assistant was Monica – a volunteer that Joan says was her angel that day. Since cataract surgery requires patients to have a follow-up appointment the same day, Joan and Monica spent the entire day together. They were paired together again when Joan returned for surgery on her other eye a few weeks later. 26 St. Joseph’s volunteers are trained appointment assistants and ready to support you through your next appointment. If you’d like an appointment assistant next time you’re at one of our sites, please inform the clinic’s reception staff 10 days in advance of your appointment.
