Mentoring is essential in training our next generation of scientists and engineers. That's why we're #StantecProud of Dr. Ruchira Somaweera's mentoring of National Geographic Explorers and sharing his experiences as a world-renown herpetologist. Based in Perth, Australia, Dr. Somaweera is a principal environmental scientist and carries on several fascinating projects, including sea turtle tagging in northern Australia, snake pheromone studies, crocodile telemetry studies in Bangladesh, and reptile monitoring at Komodo National Park.

Growing up with a love for nature and the outdoors, being associated with National Geographic Society was always a dream. That dream came true in 2012 when I received my first #NatGeo grant, and since then I’ve had the privilege of working with the society and its partners in many ways. This week marks another incredible milestone in my journey with #NationalGeographic, as I’ve been invited to mentor young explorers at the Young Explorers Retreat in Washington, D.C. I’ll be helping them shape their research programs, hone their presentation skills, and advance their careers in science. I’m truly humbled and proud of this recognition, and I hope to inspire the next generation of explorers. #explorer #mentor #mentoring #inspire #StantecProud #passion #nextgeneration
