We welcomed the inaugural Abbotsford Manufacturing Industry Tour to our facilities earlier this month! Hosted by the City of Abbotsford and Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, the tour highlighted our community's powerful manufacturing presence. Local government and business representatives saw firsthand the creative structures the skilled teams at StructureCraft can realize, including the Makers' KUbe mockup with all-wood joinery and five timber canopies for the New St. Paul's Hospital. Other local businesses toured included BARR Plastics, RAD Torque Systems, and Reimer Hardwoods Ltd., representing the industry that provides over 8,000 jobs locally. We thank the Chamber and the City for organizing a meaningful way to share the passion that drives our teams to create unique structures with wood. #local #abbotsford #manufacturing #structuralengineering #industrytour

619 Ponce City is award winning! At the WoodWorks Summit in Toronto this week, we were honoured to receive the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Sponsored Award for Handel Architects as part of the 2024 Wood Design & Building Awards program. 619 Ponce, located in Atlanta, Georgia, is a unique case study for how local timber sourcing, combined with efficient structural design and an innovative floor system, can result in both a cost effective and low carbon structure. Southern Yellow Pine glulam and CLT was harvested from local Jamestown forests and fabricated within a 200 mile radius of the site. We extend a warm thanks to WoodWorks and the Canadian Wood Council for a successful 2024 Summit at George Brown College's Waterfront Campus, featuring an array of relevant industry presentations as well as project tours. Our Managing Structural Engineering Director Mark Porter has been appointed Chair of the Board of Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC) for the 2024-2025 term. This significant achievement comes after Mark's service as Vice Chair and Board Director at EGBC and reflects his strong commitment to the engineering profession in British Columbia. As the new Chair, Mark will play a crucial role in governance, strategic planning, and the support of EGBC's mandate to respectfully regulate the engineering profession in British Columbia. "As I step into the role of Board Chair at Engineers and Geoscientists BC, I see the need to focus on building relationships, fostering collaboration, and ensuring we're equipped to meet the challenges of a changing world. From my work on structures in the UK, Caribbean, and Canada, I’m proud of the lasting impact engineers and geoscientists have on society, which is why preserving our ability to self-regulate is vital to upholding the highest standards of professional practice. Leading our efforts on climate adaptation has reinforced the importance of this responsibility, as has my work with StructureCraft, where we’re shaping a more sustainable future." -Mark Porter PEng StructEng FIStructE FEC - pictured below with the 2024-25 EGBC Board Read EGBC's announcement: https://lnkd.in/gDY2RNn3 Photos: Engineers and Geoscientists BC/ Wendy D Photography #StructuralEngineering #EGBC #Leadership #Vancouver

These 53ft, 18,000 lb. cross-laminated timber shear walls are among the largest single CLT wall lifts in North America. Check out this animation highlighting One Bridgeland Green's all-wood lateral system, a first for the South. The project, located in Cypress, TX, utilizes CLT shear walls to form the building’s central core, which is prominently featured in the elevator lobby and tenant spaces. The shear walls include glulam "flanges" to develop the chord forces and assist with carrying gravity loads from the beams framing into the core. The chord tension forces are transferred into the foundations with a carefully detailed knife plate and dowel connection. The project is designed to achieve LEED Gold and Fitwell certification and its users will benefit from the biophilic nature of mass timber construction. Designed by Lake|Flato Architects and Kirksey Architecture in a modern agrarian architectural style, the project is defined by its gabled roof topped with a linear cupola and features large timber framed balconies at each floor level. We are honoured to have played a part in the realization of this 2hr FRR office development - an important next step for Toronto. Stay tuned for more on the story of how we submitted an Alternative Solutions report to the City, resulting in exposed timber nearly everywhere in the 6- and 8-story development for Hines. T3 Wedgewood-Houston is a mixed-use community hub featuring creative office space for one of Nashville's most dynamic neighborhoods. Hines's 7-story, 200,000 sqft development, designed by HASTINGS and DLR Group, features a seven-story, 200,000-square-foot office, including five floors of glulam post-and-beam framing supporting dowel-laminated timber (DLT) floor and roof panels. Laterally, the building is supported by exterior steel bracing. Extensive vibration studies were undertaken by our engineers to ensure the DLT floor panels met the required serviceability standards for office spaces, particularly in areas with longer spans. The structural grid is designed to capitalize on the inherent one-axis spanning capacity of dowel-laminated timber, with spans ranging from 20’ to 25’. Beneath the timber levels, a concrete podium houses a 200-space parking garage. Our firm was responsible for structural engineering, fabrication, procurement, and installation of the complete timber/steel superstructure, working alongside Hoar Construction and Magnusson Klemencic Associates. This building was our fourth T3 office with Hines, following iterations in Minneapolis, Atlanta and Toronto. Photography by Nick McGinn #MassTimber #StructuralEngineering #Nashville #OfficeSpace

We participated this morning in AGC of Washington's first District Breakfast, with Leif Johnson of our Seattle office moderating the panel discussion on recent innovations in mass timber construction! Today's panel discussed cost and construction aspects related to mass timber in Seattle, and how to keep track of timber developments as this amazing material finds its way onto an expanding number of projects. Joining Leif were panelists Julie Anderson (Director of Agricultural Innovation, Washington State Department of Commerce), Luis Martinez, (Swinerton Construction), Erica Spiritos (Erica Spiritos LLC), Eddie Jezek, (Iron Workers Local 86, Washington Mass Timber Alliance), and Joshua Schaaf (Craft Contracting, Washington Mass Timber Alliance). We had the pleasure of hosting the project team for Florida's T3 FAT Village mass timber office at our headquarters last week! The building is Florida's first major mass timber development. Team members from Hines, The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company, DLR Group, and Magnusson Klemencic Associates toured our facilities, seeing the project's dowel-laminated timber floor/roof panels produced in real-time. The project's timber install starts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida early next year. It was encouraging for our teams to put a face to the name of so many folks we have been collaborating with - including several members from the past 4 T3 offices we have completed in the past decade! Our teams are responsible for engineering, fabrication, procurement, and erection of the complete timber/steel superstructure.
