A dynamic, all-season park is coming soon to the Richmond Hill community. North Leslie Community Park, tentatively named Heron View Park, will be a 6.7-acre park designed to facilitate healthy outdoor recreational activities for residents and visitors of the fast-growing GTA suburban community. The brand-new park will include a junior and senior playground, soccer field, colour-coated tennis courts with lighting, fitness equipment, a fitness loop, and site furnishings that will feature seating with umbrellas, park signage, and planting. In our role as landscape architects, we are working directly with the City of Richmond Hill, the community and broader consulting team to create a unique vision for the park that is a synthesis of ideas. As prime consultant, we are providing the leadership necessary to achieve a collaboration of expertise, and a union of realistic, cost-effective, sustainable landscape and park element solutions, to design and deliver a park that aligns with the guiding principles of the City’s Parks Plan. This includes creating a flexible, multi-use park that supports year-round use for all. The park is currently in preliminary design and concept phase, with construction proposed for 2026. The public park located within the transformative Bloor-Dufferin development is moving closer to its final design. 70 Croatia Street Park–a new, 0.9-acre urban park currently being designed in conjunction with the mixed-use development project currently under construction–is wrapping up its third and final community engagement phase. Designed by STUDIO tla in collaboration with the City of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation, developers Hazelview Investments and Fitzrovia Real Estate, along with a talented design team that includes Indigenous designers Trophic Design Inc., the park is being shaped by a clear vision to deliver a welcoming, accessible, and flexible space for all ages in the Bloor-Dufferin community. Key features of the park include natural play structures, a performance area, several seating areas, shade structures, a misting corridor, and new trees and naturalized plantings comprised of native and pollinator species. A central path, inspired by the Indigenous teachings about the Jiibay Miikana or spirit path, flows through the park and traces a historic creek that now runs beneath the park. Our involvement with the park design builds on our contributions as the prime landscape architect and urban design consultant for the broader Bloor-Dufferin development, including the overall master plan. STUDIO tla is proud to be part of this revitalization effort. Preserving valuable rental housing while adding density with an integrated tower is both smart and forward thinking. This project helps preserve the sense of community of midtown while helping ease the housing crisis.
Read about the transformation of Hazelview's iconic 75 Broadway Ave. property into the Story of Midtown Toronto® in an article featured in The Globe and Mail. Originally built in 1962, this revitalization brings together mid-century charm and modern living. The project includes upgraded interiors in the existing building and a brand-new 38-storey tower featuring a yoga room, spin studio, children's play area, and more. By 2025, over 500 new rental suites—ranging from bachelor to 3-bedroom units—will offer amenity-rich, transit-connected living in the heart of Midtown Toronto. As our urban environments are rapidly developing, creating more public spaces to encourage healthy and active cities is crucial. In the GTA, development growth is being augmented in part through developer-delivered parks that provide recreational areas for people of all ages to enjoy. This is true of a new development blossoming in northeast Toronto, ME Living from developer LASH Group, where a new 0.5-acre park recently opened: Brimorton Park. A developer-delivered park is a commitment by a developer to jointly design and construct a park with the City of Toronto that coincides with the build out of their development. As landscape architect, STUDIO tla’s role in this partnership is guiding the planning and designing process and overseeing construction activities. We worked in collaboration with the developer, the City of Toronto and a broader project team to help deliver the 0.5-acre park with distinct zones that encourage varying forms of activity and uses. The opportunity to contribute to this "precedent setting" project that's helped set a new bar for low-carbon development has been inspiring. We're looking forward to what the future holds more sustainable projects like Limberlost Place.
Limberlost Place designed by Moriyama Teshima Architects and Acton Ostry Architects Inc. for George Brown College was recently featured in The Globe and Mail - highlighting the precedent setting nature of this 10-storey, net-zero mass-timber project. To support the ambitious sustainability goals of this low-carbon building, Fast + Epp developed and tested an innovative large span beamless structural system that is comprised of timber-concrete-composite CLT slab bands with perpendicular CLT infill panels, all supported on glulam columns. The forward-thinking vision of George Brown College and their dedication to innovation has resulted in an award-winning design that will pave the way for future tall wood projects and composite systems. Across North America, malls in urban and suburban settings with large surface parking lots are transforming to meet increasing demands for additional housing and outdoor public spaces that are freely accessible and adaptable to community needs. Promenade Mall–originally built in 1986 as a suburban shopping centre–is undergoing a profound transformation that aligns with this urban design movement. In our role as landscape architect and urban designer, we're collaborating with @libertydevelopment and a multi-disciplinary project team to recast the mall's surrounding lands into a place for people to gather, socialize, shop, work, learn and live. The mall's property has been reimagined to introduce a network of complete streets for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and motorists that provides easy access to rapid transit services. These streets will integrate with numerous parks, indoor and outdoor open spaces, and gathering places that will meet the needs of a multi-generational community through an overall design that promotes vibrancy, safety and accessibility. Collaborating with such a talented project team to create a distinct urban centre for the Vaughan community is truly an honour and we eagerly anticipate the project's continued evolution and eventual completion. The City of Mississauga's evolution from its suburban roots into a vibrant urban city involves enhancing pedestrian experiences and urban space amenities, particularly in its city centre and its growing number of mixed-use developments. The imminent delivery of Elm Park is another step forward in the City’s efforts. Located at the corner of Elm Drive West and Kariya Drive just south of the popular, Japanese-inspired Kariya Park, the 0.5-hectare urban civic space–designed by STUDIO tla in collaboration with the City and Solmar Development Corporation–will feature a public art installation, play elements, pathways, a small canopy of urban trees and seating to encourage small gatherings. Construction of the new, 0.5-hectare urban civic space in downtown Mississauga will begin soon, with completion targeted for spring 2025.
