About us
Susgrainable is redefining what it means to have a sustainable business model within the food industry. Susgrainable leverages technology and partnerships to create an Upcycled Barley Flour from what was previously considered waste in the beer industry. Combined with its circular business model, Susgrainable’s bold vision is to create a world where food waste and diabetes are a thing of the past. Susgrainable currently operates out of East Vancouver. Susgrainable has partnered with 6 local craft breweries to create its inaugural product, Upcycled Barley Flour from brewers' spent grain. Upcycled Barley Flour is high in plant-based protein and fibre while being low in sugar. The Upcycled Barley Flour is used to produce a variety of baking mixes and premium baked goods available in select retailers in the Vancouver market - fighting both food waste and high sugar/low fibre diets. Our recipe for success means staying true to our core values: Health, Collaboration, Empowerment, Accountability and Fun. In doing so, we aim to strike the right balance to build healthier communities, healthier people and a healthier planet!

Throwback to the OG Cookie Recipe that started it all 🍪 Everyone who has tried both swears it’s better than our current cookie mix 🤷 So how did people get their hands on it? After Marc wrapped up his MBA, we were doing all sorts of events. One of these events was an internal market for Fresh Prep employees to discover new vendors for their add-on program. Throwback to when we had a Cookie Club 🍪 During Marc’s last semester of his MBA, he came up with an idea. $10 would buy you a week of cookies, one for every weekday during lunch hour 😋 Professors, students, and even UBC faculty couldn’t resist! It was all about building community, starting at our roots of UBC Sauder, and gathering feedback. How did it all start? 🤔 We’ve never shared the origin story of Susgrainable… until now 👀 Marc and Clinton both worked at Alberta Health Services for 5+ years, each in different roles and departments. When Marc decided to get his MBA at UBC, he had to come up with a business solution to an industry issue. As part of the stakeholder interview process to find a solution that fits everyone’s needs, Marc reached out to Clinton, knowing he was a barley farmer 🧑🌾 Clinton, aware of the issue breweries in urban centers were having with disposing of their spent grain byproduct, became intrigued by what Marc was working on. Clinton kept offering advice and support. He became invested in validating the business. After graduation, Marc, Clinton, and Angela set out with the goal of doing 100 farmers’ markets to see if there would be consumer demand… and that's when things started taking off. 📈 Crazy to think we went from this dinner brainstorming Susgrainable, to making it onto Dragons' Den Canada and rescuing 17,500kg of spent grain a few years later! 🙌 #SocialEntrepreneurship #ThrowbackThursday #FoodandBeverage #CircularEconomy #Inspiration
