What would it take to restore the world's forests? It's a question that demands us to think not just about the trees, but about the people who grow them. The land stewarded by smallholder farmers collectively represents one of the biggest opportunities to restore the world’s forests, but farmers often face barriers to make land-use choices in favour of growing trees. Taking Root works with farmers to remove those barriers so that growing trees improves their livelihoods. The result is lasting impacts for the benefit of climate, nature, and people. 6.3 million hectares of land were deforested in 2023, including over 4 million of tropical forests, according to a report by Forest Declaration Assessment. As all eyes turn to COP16 and the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework, the report's words resonate more now than ever: "We cannot afford for these trends to continue. All leaders must unite to prioritize forest protection, conservation, and restoration." Taking Root's Meike Siegner has contributed to a policy piece for the upcoming G20 summit in Brazil. Led by Lara Fornabaio and Lisa Sachs from the Columbia Center for Sustainable Investments, the piece advocates for a crucial shift in public and private investments from nature-negative finance to nature-based solutions. As world leaders prepare to gather later this year, it's imperative to champion the financing of nature-based solutions to improve livelihoods, restore nature, and mitigate the climate crisis. The policy piece emphasizes that these solutions should prioritize community-led restoration and high-quality credits, ensuring that the co-benefits of these projects directly benefit local people. The CommuniTree Carbon Program in Nicaragua is only possible thanks to APRODEIN, a local team of agroforestry experts. They support farmers throughout the entire lifecycle of the project, helping them to improve their livelihoods by growing trees. We recently spoke to Elvin Castellón Alvarado, co-founder of CommuniTree and Executive Director of APRODEIN. He explained more about their vital role in making the project a success.
