🌟🤖 AI Spotlight Series 🤖🌟: Using AI power to prevent pests and protect food crops: Amidst a growing global population and an urgent need for increased food production, crop diseases such as wheat rust spread further north and create an increasing threat to production. And while more than $85B is spent globally on crop protection, increasing the use of pesticides brings risks to the environment. By applying computational biochemistry, genomics, machine learning (ML), computer vision and robotics, Terramera and their partners were able to develop new pest and pathogen controls to manage disease in field crops, minimize the use of pesticides, and secure export markets. Their work established the foundations of a computational biochemistry platform to facilitate digital data collection that enables computational models for developing new agricultural fungicidal formulations for wheat leaf rust, which is caused by fungal infections and attacks some of Canada’s most important crops, including wheat and barley. Their work is protecting the world’s food supply and lessening impacts on the environment, with potential for the computing tools developed to be applicable in other fields outside of agriculture, including medicine, biotechnology, chemistry and computer science.
