Youth Award Recipient 2024 – Joy Akinkunmi We are thrilled to recognize Joy Akinkunmi, a remarkable Grade 11 student at Charles P. Allen High School, as this year's Youth Award recipient. Joy’s innovative project, Pill Smart 2.0, was her entry for the 2024 Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa. This automatic pill dispenser, designed with adaptive safety features, aims to support dementia patients by ensuring correct medication intake—addressing a crucial challenge faced by millions worldwide. Joy’s dedication to healthcare innovation earned her several prestigious awards, including the “Health and Wellness” Challenge Award, the Shad Canada Scholarship, and the S.M. Blair Family Foundation Award for projects with potential for patent application. She also received a Gold Medal in the intermediate division. Beyond her scientific achievements, Joy volunteers at a long-term care facility and plans to pursue a career in medicine, combining her passion for engineering with her commitment to making a positive impact on the world.
