Allseas and TMC subsidiary NORI recently wrapped up the first integrated #nodule collection system trials in the CCZ since the 1970s, collecting roughly 4,500 tonnes of nodules and lifting over 3,000 tonnes up a 4.3km-long riser to the surface. The pilot system will next be upgraded to a production capacity of 1.3 million tonnes per annum ahead of our first commercial project, Project Zero. Learn more about the pilot system trials from Allseas engineers themselves in this short video. #deepsea #offshore #batterymetals #nickel #cobalt

The Metals Company will enable the battery-powered shift to electric vehicles with the lightest planetary touch.
About us
The Metals Company was founded in 2021 through the merger of DeepGreen and the Sustainable Opportunities Acquisition Corporation, to scale nodule collecting and onshore processing systems. We produce metals from polymetallic rocks to power electric vehicles. For over a decade, we’ve been exploring the planet’s largest known deposit of battery-grade metals: nodules on the seafloor of the Clarion Clipperton Zone in the Pacific Ocean. During this time, our onshore team has developed and successfully deployed a metallurgical system to derive key battery-grade metals from these remarkable rocks while generating zero solid processing waste. Our team is made up of scientists, environmentalists, engineers, architects, and business leaders who see the climate crisis as the biggest challenge of our time. Electric vehicles and renewable energy are a key part of the solution, but scaling these technologies will require hundreds of millions of tons of new metals. Polymetallic nodules represent the cleanest source of battery grade metals on the planet and the best path forward.

Congratulations to Congress members and nodule champions re-elected last night who - along with sitting Senators - are helping build U.S. critical mineral independence and safeguarding the nation's economy, and national security. #deepseamining #energytransition #nationalsecurity #criticalminerals #supplychain #nickel #cobalt #copper #manganese

In our October newsletter, we look back on the significant progress made in the U.S. - on both sides of the aisle - on the topic of deep-sea minerals. Following today’s election, many pending actions are set to accelerate in 2025. https://lnkd.in/eQKzVkPj #deepseamining #energytransition #criticalminerals #supplychain #nickel #cobalt #copper #manganese

As the U.S. heads to the polls, we’re looking back on significant efforts - on both sides of the aisle - to strengthen national supply chains through deep-sea minerals. The deep-sea is a major priority for the U.S. and post-election many pending actions are set to accelerate in 2025. In March, ~350 former political and military leaders urged the Senate to ratify UNCLOS, warning of the loss of deep-sea mineral sites worth trillions. Their letter followed the introduction of the Responsible Use of Seafloor Resources Act (H.R. 7636) in Congress, which aims to provide financial support for deep-sea minerals to secure critical mineral independence for defense, energy, and cleantech. With support from military leaders and industry groups, the Act and other initiatives underscores the nation’s commitment to assessing the potential of deep-sea minerals to address supply chain vulnerabilities. Amid growing U.S. interest, we await the DoD’s response to our application for $9M to assess feasibility of a U.S. plant to refine nodule-derived intermediates. New report by the 'Voice of German Industry', BDI - Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e.V., notes that Germany cannot afford to be left behind on deep-sea mineral exploitation and should engage in regulations to allow responsible operations. "Japan, Saudi Arabia, Norway - more and more countries are focusing on the extraction of raw materials in the deep sea. Germany cannot escape this trend." "The question now is rather when - and not whether - the commercial mining of manganese nodules will come. In November 2022, the German government declared its support for a precautionary pause in deep-sea resource extraction. This step is not very effective. This is because there is no majority for it internationally or in the [ISA] with its 169 member states. Therefore, a precautionary pause or a unilateral moratorium will neither lead to less extraction of raw materials in the deep sea nor to more environmental research or the development of high environmental protection standards." The four metals contained in nodules are critical not just for the energy transition, but will support the ongoing industrialisation of the developing world and global population growth. In a new global criticality ranking published by International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI), nickel, copper, cobalt and manganese received 'most critical' status from a broader list of 45 minerals.
