Are we inadvertently teaching the next generation how to be depressed? In the article by Samantha Stein, Psy.D., the main idea is that contemporary thought patterns, particularly among progressive youth, may be fostering anxiety and depression rather than resilience. She touches on the work of authors Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt as they introduce the concept of "reverse CBT," where instead of correcting harmful beliefs, societal influences reinforce them, leading to a troubling cycle of emotional distress. By examining these cultural dynamics, Stein sheds light on the importance of facing life's complexities to promote healthier mental states among young people. Adverse childhood experiences are a known and prevalent origin of trauma. What happens when children blame themselves for trauma? This important article explores self-blame in childhood trauma, a concept termed "turning against oneself". Children in empathy-lacking environments often deny emotional neglect, believing that basic care equates to good parenting. This coping mechanism teaches them that expressing emotional needs is unnecessary, leading to long-term impacts on self-esteem and relationships. As adults, these individuals may struggle with feelings of worthlessness and emotional disconnection. For more info about this and the internalization of anger, read the article: https://lnkd.in/enGwNCcB What do you think about this? How impactful can self-blame be on developing minds? Would you be more likely to experience a divorce if your parents were divorced? Research shows how parental relationship instability can affect adult children and the romantic connections they develop throughout life. Children whose parents are divorced are likely to internalize these experiences and feelings and embody them within their own relationships. Social psychologist Theresa DiDonato, Ph.D., uses pre-existing literature to compile an evidence-based list of the ways instability in parent relationships can predict challenges in the child's relations. She highlights the importance of understanding that this intergenerational transmission of relationship insecurity is correlational, not causal. Importantly, the article shows how to mitigate the risk of having similar relationship difficulties as your parents. These include early therapy interventions, open communication, the presence of other healthy relationship models, etc... Finally, the article speaks to the ways in which acknowledging and addressing how these unhealthy relationships manifest intergenerationally can be a stepping stone for breaking the cycle and promoting resilience between couples. Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/e8agsTJQ Let us know your thoughts below! The article presented today looks at how childhood trauma can lead to adult loneliness. Loneliness, particularly among young adults, is a significant issue, with over 58% of U.S. adults reporting feeling lonely. Childhood trauma, such as emotional neglect or abuse, can lead to long-lasting emotional wounds that increase feelings of loneliness in adulthood. Annie Tanasugarn, PhD, includes in her article the feelings that commonly characterize loneliness, as well as the environmental factors like social media that can influence an increased sense of being lonely.
