“We don't have a right to come into these communities and tell them what to do with their housing. Our research is driven by community needs rather than research desires.” - Helen Stopps A recently published paper, "Ten Questions Concerning First Nations On-Reserve Housing in Canada", is bringing visibility to the complexities of the on-reserve housing crisis in Canada. The research team behind the paper gained data first-hand from those living in on-reserve communities and prioritized building trust between researchers, advocates, and communities. ⭐ Learn more about the team’s approach and findings: https://lnkd.in/gi--vJcz ⭐ Read the paper to explore the 10 questions: https://lnkd.in/gGkGewSr Led by co-principal investigators Helen Stopps, an architectural science professor at Toronto Metropolitan University, and Sarah Haines, a civil and mineral engineering professor at University of Toronto (U of T), Nicholas Spence, a sociology professor at U of T, Becky Big Canoe, a member of the Chippewas of Georgina Island and an Indigenous housing and land justice consultant, and Natalie C., a band member of White Bear First Nations and founder of Rocktree MGO Construction Material Inc., the team continues their research and dialogue with communities, most recently conducting building condition assessments and measuring the indoor air quality of on-reserve homes in Saskatchewan. #SustainableHousing #IndigenousHousing #FromHarvestToHouse

The Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science (FEAS) - where purpose-driven people advance technology and design.
About us
Welcome to the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science (FEAS), where purpose-driven people advance technology and design. Our students, researchers and faculty grapple with the big questions from a human-centric perspective: On what terms will AI shape our future? Is truly inclusive technology possible? How can we strengthen markets for green energy and architecture? They put our faculty’s vast resources to use – from our leading-edge facilities to our partnerships with industry, hospitals and the community – and they make the most of them, applying their knowledge and designs in the real world. Most importantly, they work together across disciplines, tapping into what we at FEAS believe is the most valuable driver of innovation: diversity of thought and experience.

👏 Congratulations to chemical engineering professor ChungHyuk Lee on receiving 1.08M in funding over five years from the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology (KEIT)-Mitacs Accelerate International Award. Alongside fellow professors, Nariman Yousefi and Dae Kun Hwang, Lee and his team aim to develop environmentally friendly and cost-effective recycling solutions for precious group metals through electrochemical methods. The team is also working with industry partners, S3R Co. and Daeheung M&T Co., to design scalable approaches for manufacturing recycled electrodes. “This funding will enable us to train the next generation of researchers who can lead the transition into a clean circular economy of precious group metals for hydrogen technology applications.” - ChungHyuk Lee Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gNDps2_3 Mitacs Toronto Metropolitan University - Department of Chemical Engineering Research – Toronto Metropolitan University

Associate, Civil/Structural & Building Science at -30- Forensic Engineering and Contract Lecturer with the Department of Architectural Science, Toronto Metropolitan University
I am happy to share with you that I have been awarded the Gold Medal Award from the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science at Toronto Metropolitan University. This feels truly surreal. I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Miljana Horvat for her transformative role in my academic journey and for being an incredible mentor! I want to thank Bettina Hoar, Chair of Sustainable Buildings Canada (SBC) for her encouragement, wisdom, and guidance. SBC is a not-for-profit organization deeply committed to providing a realistic, independent, and collaborative approach and demonstrating how it is possible to make a positive impact on the sustainable Canadian built environment. I had been with the SBC's Better Building Boot Camp (BBBC) (https://lnkd.in/gS3XxiDB) last year. Under Bettina's leadership, the BBBC graduated its 5th cohort this year and she is actively working to expand the program. I want to thank Camara Chambers, Director of Leadership Development at DAIS, for inspiring me in a leadership program I undertook in fall 2022. The DAIS is a public policy and leadership think tank at Toronto Metropolitan University, working at the intersection of technology, education and democracy to build shared prosperity and citizenship for Canada. I also want to thank Dr. Russell Richman for introducing me to the wonderful world of Building Science! I wouldn't have achieved this without the incredible community I've met along my journey. From those I've learned from to those who continue to inspire me through various leadership development and learning opportunities, I owe you all my deepest thanks. This award only strengthens my resolve to continue contributing to the advancement of resilient buildings in the face of a changing climate. I am committed to working with the community and inspiring the next generation of students and young people to make it their life goal, just as I have. #buildings #sustainability #cities #buildingscience #buildingenvelope #science #resilience #climatechange #community #neighbourhoods
