Earlier this year, the Board set out to answer the question, “Can Toronto become the Next Boston?” The response from life science leaders and experts has been clear: Toronto IS a life sciences city and it doesn’t have to be like Boston to be successful. Earlier this week, we hosted the 3rd event in our Life Sciences breakfast series, focused on Toronto's Regenerative Medicine Frontier. Yesterday I had the opportunity to speak with media about the damaging and very costly impacts on the Toronto region’s economy from an unprecedented simultaneous stoppage of both railways across Canada.    This morning, I applaud the Federal government’s request for a back to work order from the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) and binding arbitration between parties. CN workers are back on track this morning and – we hope – CPKC employees will return as soon as possible.   Even these few days of stoppage will mean weeks of catch-up for goods movement across Canada and into the US – our largest market. Still, this decision protects jobs and will avert the loss of billions of dollars in economic damage – not just here but in the US.   The reputational damage from this very close call is yet to be determined. The looming strike made global headlines, corroding confidence in our ability to remain a reliable trading partner for critical supplies.   Let's all remember, Canada is an export-dependent economy, feeding North American and international supply chains heavily reliant on rail. We can’t afford to end up here again.

Canada's rail network, which moves $1.04 billion worth of goods daily, is essential to our economy. A work stoppage now could destabilize key sectors, jeopardize jobs, and damage our global standing as a reliable trading partner. Yesterday's Life Sciences breakfast exploring Toronto's Regenerative Medicine Frontier can honestly be summed up in one word - WOW. Gene therapy. Advanced AI modelling. Best in class T-cell therapy. Digital twins. Transplants that get stronger for new recipients. Organ drone delivery. It may sound like the stuff of a science fiction novel but for Toronto researchers, scientists, and health care leaders, it's just another day of work. The unbelievable innovation and development of life changing regenerative medicine coming out of our region is phenomenal. We have all the ingredients for success. We are sharing those ingredients with the world and changing the international healthcare landscape as a result. It's essential that we make the capital, talent, and commercialization investments needed to build and protect a competitive future for this critical sector.
