What does the hype around AI really mean for business? As AI regulations in Canada and elsewhere are only just beginning to emerge, AI systems are creating blind spots in risk management. Artificial intelligence is transforming how companies across sectors do business and manage legal concerns, with areas such as employment, privacy and cybersecurity taking high priority for boards and management. In this Torys Quarterly, we map out some of the most common questions we are being asked to help organizations turn AI unknowns into strategies: https://bit.ly/4gr7gAr #artificialintelligence #AI #cybersecurity #technology #innovation #law #TorysQuarterly2024 #TorysAInsight

With the start of Rosh Hashanah, it indicates the start of a New Year and High Holy Days in the Jewish calendar. The beginning two days mark the start of the “10 Days of Awe” with the last day being Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. Yom Kippur is considered the holiest day in the Jewish faith and a time for solemn reflection and repentance, observed through fasting and prayer. Yom Kippur ends at sundown with breaking the fast through a joyous gathering with loved ones to enjoy a meal together. For those who are observing, we wish you and your loved ones Shana Tovah U’metukah (שנה טובה ומתוקה) – may you have a good and sweet new year.

“Legal leaders need to talk about mental health openly.” Critical thinking skills, perfectionism, drive—these shared characteristics can help make lawyers great at what they do, but for some of us this can come at the cost of mental health challenges. We are proud to support the International Bar Association’s Professional Wellbeing Commission in its latest podcast series, “Mental health in the legal profession”, focused on mental health and wellbeing within the legal industry. The series features insight from legal and mental health leaders: - Jeff Davis, Chief Legal Officer, Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan - Antoinette Moriarty, psychotherapist and Head of the Law Society of Ireland’s Psychological Services - Melissa Kennedy, Executive Vice-President and Chief Legal Officer of Sun Life In this clip from session 1, “The mindset of a lawyer”, Jeff and Antoinette talk about the need to destigmatize open discussion of mental health, and how doing so can help broker common ground between leaders and their team. https://bit.ly/3zWIfN8 #wellness #wellbeing #mentalhealth #worklifebalance

Although art does not exist in a vacuum, is AI-generated work “inspired” by, or “derivative” of, the creative works it was trained on? As the financial realities—and vast potential—of AI technology grow clearer, questions of copyright infringement and IP protection become increasingly pointed. https://bit.ly/4esAehB #artificialintelligence #AI #generativeAI #intellectualproperty #technology #TorysQuarterly2024 #TorysAInsight Andrew Bernstein | Andrew Shaughnessy
